No matter the matchup, Super Bowl betting is guaranteed to draw in international interest on a level that few other events can dream of matching. Much of that interest is from experienced bettors, but many first-time or infrequent bettors also love to bet on the NFL’s annual championship game.
Placing bets on the Super Bowl is much like wagering on many other NFL games in many ways. There are the basic bets like moneyline and spread bets and over/under bets like you will find when betting on regular season games.
But due to the importance and interest level, there are far more options available for bettors than games in Week 2 or Week 12, or even with other marquee sporting events like the World Series or March Madness. At top U.S. betting sites like BetOnline and MyBookie, there will be hundreds upon hundreds of Super Bowl betting options as the big game approaches.
As a result, there is a lot for many bettors to consider beyond who is likely to win or cover the spread or if the game will go over or under. That is the case for bettors of all experience and interest levels, but it can be especially true for newbies who are just wading into the wide, wild world of Super Bowl betting for the first time.
Including strategic considerations, what are some of the things to keep in mind when preparing to bet on the Super Bowl, no matter the matchup?
Below are three top Super Bowl betting tips for beginners. Before we dive into that trio of tips, check out this supplementary video.
Super Bowl Betting Tips for Beginners
1. Understand This Is the Super Bowl
Now this one may sound self-explanatory but let me tell you what I mean.
This is the Super Bowl. It is the MOST BET single game sporting event of the entire year. Vegas has all of their minions working overtime trying to perfect these lines to ensure no losses on their part.
Football runs the world, and Super Bowl Sunday is basically a holiday. Last year, it was estimated that 50 million Americans wagered more than $16 billion on the game.
That’s right, sixteen billion U.S. dollars.
That includes Super Bowl spread, moneyline, and over/under betting, and it also includes Super Bowl player props and novelty options like Gatorade color odds, and national anthem odds. It was estimated that this is the same amount as all of March Madness, which consists of 67 games from the First Four to the national championship game.
Now, what does this all mean?
We are dealing with the sharpest lines imaginable on every single market. It is very difficult to find an edge, so proceed with caution
Super Bowl betting is typically for fun, so there’s no need to lay too much of your bankroll on just one game.
It’s also worth noting Nevada casinos have only lost money on the Super Bowl twice in more than three decades.
2. Manage Your Super Bowl Betting Bankroll
Yes, this is the last NFL game until September and it’s the Super Bowl.
If you have been betting on the NFL this season but are betting on the Super Bowl for the first time, you don’t want to throw away all the money you’ve made this season. And if you haven’t had a great deal of success, now is not the time to chase your losses.
If you are new to wagering on the Super Bowl or on sports in general, the idea of having a big win right out of the gate might be exciting. But responsible gambling should be the top priority, even if this ends up being the only time you place bets all year.
Set aside a certain number of units for your bets and spread them out accordingly. Putting ten units on the Super Bowl coin toss probably isn’t the best idea based on the unpredictability of such bets, but a quarter unit wouldn’t hurt anybody.
Have a little fun, but don’t so at the expense of your bankroll or bank account.
3. Have Some Fun
If you are watching the Super Bowl, you may be tuning in from a gathering with your friends and family.
Enjoy your time with them. There’s no need to bet so much that you are more worried about your wagers and can’t enjoy the company around you. If you are hosting loved ones and neighbors at your home, throwing the best Super Bowl party, stuffing yourself with tasty treats, and making the most of one of America’s unofficial holidays should be your focus, not how much you have riding on the game.
Live to fight another day and enjoy the last NFL game of the season.
