Types of Tennis Bets
Moneyline (ML)
Betting on moneylines in tennis works the same as betting moneylines in other sports and leagues like the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB.
Here’s an example, using women’s tennis stars Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka.
- Iga Swiatek -175
- Aryna Sabalenka +155
In this example, Swiatek is a -175 ML favorite. If you place a $100 bet on her to win, you will win $57.14.
Spread
Similarly, betting on spreads in tennis works the same as betting on spreads in other sports, leagues, and events.
The most popular type of tennis spread bet is the games spread bet.
Here’s another example using Swiatek and Sabalenka.
- Iga Swiatek -3.5
- Aryna Sabalenka +3.5
If Swiatek wins 6-4, 6-4, that would mean that she covered the spread due to winning 12 total games to Sabalenka’s eight.
But if she defeats Sabalenka 6-4 in the first set and requires a tie-break to win the second set 7-6, Sabalenka will cover the +3.5 because she won 10 games to Swiatek’s 13.
Over/Under (Total) Betting
As with moneyline and spread betting, over/under betting in tennis works the same as it does in other sports, leagues, and events.
The most popular type of tennis over/under bet is the total match games over/under.
- Over 20.5 Games (-120)
- Under 20.5 Games (-110)
If you bet on under 20.5 games in a match between Swiatek and Sabalenka and it finishes 6-4, 6-4 in favor of Swiatek, the under 20.5 will be a winning bet because only 20 games were played.
But if Swiatek defeats Sabalenka 6-4, 7-6, the over 20.5 games will be the winner because 23 total games were played.
Betting on Tennis Tournament Futures Odds
Futures betting is one of the most popular, if not the most popular, way to bet on tennis.
If you rather focus on backing one player to win a tournament rather than betting on several matches throughout that tournament, you can bet on tournament futures before or during the event.
Tennis Betting Tips and Strategies
When betting on tennis, there are a few important factors to consider whether it is a Grand Slam or a smaller event:
Take Note of Playing Surface Strengths and Weaknesses
Some players are stronger on hard courts. Others are stronger on clay courts. Others excel on grass.
On the other end of the spectrum, a player can be really good on hard courts but struggle on clay or grass.
There can be some great value opportunities throughout the year with betting on underdogs who are playing on their best surface against a favorite who is playing on a surface they may not be particularly fond of or successful on.
Injuries and Fatigue Can Be Key
If someone has been dealing with injuries or has played a lot of tennis in recent weeks, they could be a good candidate to fade, especially if they are playing on a surface that is not their favorite.
Evaluate Recent Form
As with other individual and team sports, recent form should always be taken into consideration when betting on tennis odds.
