F1 Drivers’ & Constructors’ Championship Odds: Norris, McLaren Turning Up the Heat

Entering the 2024 season, Formula 1 championship odds pointed to yet another dominant campaign for Max Verstappen and Red Bull.
When Verstappen opened the season with four wins in the first five races, it seemed like a competitive championship chase for either the World Drivers’ Championship or World Constructors’ Championship was even less likely than it appeared entering the season.
But with nine races remaining in the season, everything is very much up for grabs for both titles.
With Lando Norris rolling to a resounding 23-second victory at Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix and saving his best for the 72nd and final lap to claim fastest lap and an extra point, Verstappen is 70 points in front of McLaren’s main man ahead of next Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix.
Current 2024 Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship Standings (Through 15 of 24 Races)
- Max Verstappen (Red Bull) – 295
- Lando Norris (McLaren) – 225
- Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) – 192
- Oscar Piastri (McLaren) – 179
- Carlos Sainz Jr. (Ferrari) – 172
- Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) – 154
- Sergio Perez (Red Bull) – 139
- George Russell (Mercedes) – 122
And with Oscar Piastri finishing fourth, two spots ahead of Sergio Perez, McLaren shaved 12 more points off Red Bull’s World Constructors’ Championship lead, which now sits at only 30 points.
Current Formula 1 World Constructors’ Championship Standings (Through 15 of 24 Races)
- Red Bull – 434
- McLaren – 404
- Ferrari – 370
- Mercedes – 276
Verstappen remains the favorite for the World Drivers’ Championship, but at this juncture, he looks the most vulnerable he has since his run of dominance started in 2022.
As per the latest Formula 1 championship odds at Bovada, he is still the odds-on favorite, but Norris is charging hard.
2024 F1 World Drivers’ Championship Odds (Through 15 of 24 Races)
- Max Verstappen -400
- Lando Norris +250
- Oscar Piastri +10000
- Charles Leclerc +25000
- Lewis Hamilton +25000
- Carlos Sainz Jr. +50000
- George Russell +50000
Though Verstappen has failed to win any of the last five races, Sunday’s result at Zandvoort was just the second time in that stretch that Norris finished ahead of him. Therefore, the tension isn’t as thick for the title tussle between the two longtime friends as it may be in a few races’ time.
But while a fourth straight title for Verstappen remains the favored outcome with oddsmakers, Perez’s inability to position himself close to the podium has put Red Bull’s three-peat hopes in a rather perilous position.
In fact, McLaren is now almost as much of a World Constructors’ Championship favorite as Verstappen is for the drivers’ title.
2024 F1 World Constructors’ Championship Odds (Through 15 of 24 Races)
- McLaren -350
- Red Bull +250
- Mercedes +4000
- Ferrari +5000
What lies ahead in each title race?
Even after Norris’s maiden Formula 1 win in Miami, Verstappen appeared to have the upper hand, as he beat out Norris for the win in three of the following four races (the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Canadian Grand Prix, and Spanish Grand Prix).
But Norris and McLaren are the fastest in the field now, and if they can stay sharp with strategy—which has tripped them up multiple times this season—things could be finely poised entering the final stretch.
It is very telling that Verstappen is now only -130 to win ten or more races, when a third straight season with double-digit wins seemed like a shoo-in after his Spanish Grand Prix victory. However, that this is Norris’s first rodeo as a championship challenger is why Verstappen must still be considered the favorite at this point.
But in the constructors’ championship clash, McLaren’s ascendance to the top spot seems like a formality at this juncture.
Perez’s sixth-place finish at Zandvoort was his first top-six finish in his last nine races and could perhaps be considered progress. But he started fifth, and had Mercedes made not made a questionable call to have George Russell pit late in the race, that result may not have occurred.
And even though he did finish in the top six, Checo finished behind Piastri for the ninth straight time. And with the exception of the Spanish Grand Prix, where Piastri finished seventh and Perez eighth, the advantage has been by multiple positions.
If that continues to happen and Norris can consolidate his position at the front of the field, McLaren may move ahead of Red Bull prior to F1’s return to North America for the United States Grand Prix (October 20, 3:00 pm ET, ABC).
