For many, Super Bowl Sunday means the end of the NFL season, a chance to host a fun Super Bowl party, and an opportunity to see just how many chicken wings one can consume in a handful of hours. For others, Super Bowl Sunday means that the Daytona 500, the “Super Bowl of NASCAR” and the opener of the NASCAR Cup Series season, is one week away.
The race doesn’t have any say in the championship beyond giving the winner a likely place in the playoffs, but it is the biggest races in motorsports and one of the most notable events in the annual American sports calendar along with events like the World Series, Kentucky Derby, March Madness, and the Super Bowl.
While a number of those events are won by the favorites or teams/players considered top contenders, the Daytona 500, as is the case with other superspeedway races, can regularly produce an unexpected winner.
In fact, the last three winners of the Daytona 500 have fallen into that category. After wins by Michael McDowell and Austin Cindric in 2021 and 2022, respectively, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. took the checkered flag last year ahead of 2022 Cup Series champion Joey Logano.

What Is the Starting Order for the 2024 Daytona 500?
With qualifying and Thursday’s two Bluegreen Vacations Duel races in the books, the starting lineup for the 2024 Daytona 500 is now set, and Logano, who won the race in 2015, will start on pole. Joining him in the front row is another former winner, as McDowell will start second.
With how wild things can get, the starting lineup matters only so much, but here’s a rundown of the front ten rows of the 40-car field.
- Joey Logano
- Michael McDowell
- Christopher Bell
- Tyler Reddick
- Chase Elliott
- Austin Cindric
- Alex Bowman
- Denny Hamlin
- Carson Hocevar
- John Hunter Nemechek
- Erik Jones
- Harrison Burton
- Daniel Suarez
- Zane Smith
- Ty Gibbs
- Brad Keselowski
- Kyle Larson
- William Byron
- Chris Buescher
- Chase Briscoe
Logano and McDowell are two of four former winners starting in the top ten, along with Cindric and three-time winner Hamlin (2016, 2019, 2020).
Hocevar and Smith, who are teammates at Spire Motorsports, are both Cup Series rookies who are making the jump from the Truck Series to full-time Cup rides, while Nemechek is making his return to a full-time Cup ride after leading the Xfinity Series in wins last season.
With the starting lineup locked in, how do race odds shake out?

Who Are the Favorites to Win the 2024 Daytona 500?
Denny Hamlin (+1000)
He came in 37th in 2022 and 17th last year, but since finishing no better than 17th in his first six Daytona 500 appearances, Hamlin has finished in the top five eight times in his last 12 appearances.
He is one of six drivers to win the Super Bowl of NASCAR three or more times. Last season, he started eighth four times, in the spring Kansas and Darlington races, the Ally 400 at Nashville, and the HighPoint.com 400 at Pocono. That starting position was a good one for him, as he won at Kansas and Pocono, came in third in the Ally 400, and finished 12th at Darlington.
Joey Logano (+1100)
After winning his second Cup Series title, Logano made the playoffs for the sixth straight season but won only once (at Atlanta in the season’s fifth race) and finished 12th in the standings.
He marked off a career achievement by winning the Daytona 500 pole for the first time, and he will fancy his chances to finish where he will start. This is the seventh time (in 16 appearances) that he will start in the front three rows in this race, and in the previous six instances, he finished first, sixth, fourth, fourth, 26th, and second.
Brad Keselowski (+1100)
Will this be Keselowski’s year at Daytona? In 14 previous appearances, he has finished in the top ten just three times and hasn’t finished in the top five since 2014.
But despite starting near the middle of the field, he is one of the favorites to take the win, which would be his first with RFK Racing and his first since his victory in the 2021 GEICO 500 at Talladega.
Ryan Blaney (+1200)
How will the reigning Cup Series champion begin his title defense?
He will start 32nd and have to use a backup car on Sunday after being caught up in an 11-car wreck in the second Duel race on Thursday, but that shouldn’t discourage bettors.
In nine previous Daytona 500 appearances, Blaney has finished in the top ten five times, including four times in six attempts in a Penske car. His two best results, runner-up finishes in 2017 and 2022, came with him starting 36th and 27th, respectively.
