Yesterday’s final Round of 12 race in the NASCAR Xfinity Series playoffs saw Sam Mayer come through in a must-win situation at the Charlotte roval to reach the Round of 8. Will we see a similar result in today’s Bank of America Roval 400 (2:00 pm ET, NBC)?
Mayer, who was dead last in the Round of 12, won the pole for yesterday’s Drive for the Cure 250 and went on to take the checkered flag, securing his spot in the next round.
Mayer’s win, along with Sheldon Creed and Sammy Smith doing enough to avoid disaster, meant that there was heartbreak for Daniel Hemric and Parker Kligerman, who finished points shy of advancing.
Similar scenarios could be in play in today’s Cup Series race, which is the final Round of 12 race in this year’s playoffs. Points leader William Byron (Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 at Texas) and Ryan Blaney (YellaWood 500 at Talladega) are already through to the Round of 8 by virtue of race wins in the first two Round of 12 races. Also, Denny Hamlin is all but certain to move on, as he is 50 points above the cut line.
But uncertainty reigns for everyone else, including Christopher Bell, who is only 22 points above the cut line.
NASCAR Cup Series Points Standings (Through Two Round of 12 Races)
Drivers in bold have qualified for the Round of 8 with wins in the Round of 12.
- William Byron – 3136
- Denny Hamlin – 3108
- Christopher Bell – 3080
- Ryan Blaney – 3078
- Chris Buescher -3077
- Martin Truex Jr. – 3075
- Kyle Larson – 3073
- Brad Keselowski – 3060
- Tyler Reddick – 3058
- Bubba Wallace – 3051
- Ross Chastain – 3050
- Kyle Busch – 3034
Reddick will start the 109-lap race on pole, with Wallace (fourth) and Busch (fifth) also starting near the front.
That gives them a decent head start against Buescher (20th), Keselowski (19th), and Larson (36th), with the 2021 Cup Series champion in an especially disadvantageous position. Larson will start near the rear after hitting the wall in practice, rendering his car unfit to be able to make a qualifying run.

2023 Bank of America Roval 400 Predictions and Picks
Those who are starting in the top ten have a major advantage over the rest of the field, based on the results in the first five road course races in the Cup Series this season.
The lowest starting position for a winner was eighth (Martin Truex Jr. at the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma), while the other four winners all started in the first two rows.
Starting Positions for Road Course Winners in 2023
- EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix (Tyler Reddick): 2nd
- Toyota/Save Mart 350 (Martin Truex Jr.): 8th
- Grant Park 220 (Shane van Gisbergen): 3rd
- Verizon 200 at the Brickyard (Michael McDowell): 4th
- Go Bowling at the Glen (William Byron): 2nd
Similar results have played out in the short history of the Bank of America Roval 400, with Chase Elliott in 2019 the only driver to win after starting outside the top ten.
Bank of America Roval 400 Race Winners
- 2018 (Ryan Blaney): 9th
- 2019 (Chase Elliott): 19th
- 2020 (Chase Elliott): 2nd
- 2021 (Kyle Larson): 10th
- 2022 (Christopher Bell): 8th
So, that puts the spotlight squarely on the top ten of the starting lineup, which features five playoff drivers in Reddick, Bell, Wallace, Busch, and Hamlin.

This week’s finishing position picks are also favorable for the drivers who qualified well.
Elliott missed the EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix, which took place while he was sidelined with a fractured tibia. But in the other four races, he has three top-five finishes and could have had a fourth if not for the unforgettable fuel-related foul-up that ruined his day at Watkins Glen.
Elliott has finished fourth, eighth, sixth, seventh, eleventh, and seventh in his last six races, and he is one of the best road course drivers in NASCAR history.
Elliott may not win the Bank of America Roval 400, but he is +105 at Bovada to finish in the top five, and with where he is starting, that is getting locked in with no second-guessing.
Bell finished 31st at COTA, but he came in ninth at Sonoma, ninth at Indianapolis, and third at Watkins Glen, and he won the first two stages in Chicago before ultimately finishing 18th.
Last year’s race winner doesn’t need to win to get in, but he should be a popular winner pick. He isn’t mine, but I do like him to finish in the top five, which is +170 at BetUS.
For my last finishing position pick for the Bank of America Roval 400, I’m staying inside the front five rows and rolling with the polesitter.
In addition to his win at COTA, Reddick finished fourth at Indianapolis and eighth at Watkins Glen, ran in the top three in the first two stages in Chicago before finishing 28th, and saw his chances for a strong finish at Sonoma, where he qualified second but finished 33rd, done in by a blown tire late in the race.
I usually prefer to stick to longer odds for these picks, but Reddick is -120 at BetUS to finish in the top five. That is outstanding value given where he is starting in the field, his prowess on road courses, and what he needs to do today.
But is he my Bank of America Roval 400 race winner pick? I’m inclined to roll with Elliott, as he is certainly due, has won this race twice, and is overall a road course ace.
But after getting a 1-2 yesterday from Mayer and Cole Custer, who started and finished first and second, I’m not looking outside the front row here. I split my investment between Mayer and Custer yesterday and was happy with the result, and I’m locking in the same with Reddick and Bell.
