No Strider, No Problem: Brilliant Braves Brewing Another 100-Win Season

By now, no one should be surprised to see the Atlanta Braves find a way to continue winning even when adversity hits. That doesn’t diminish how impressive they have been over the first few weeks of the 2024 MLB season, especially in the wake of losing star pitcher Spencer Strider for the season.
After sweeping the struggling Houston Astros in a three-game series at Minute Maid Park, the Braves are 12-5. Entering this weekend’s visit from the Texas Rangers, they are one game ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers (11-6) for the best record in the National League and two games ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies atop the NL East.
As it stands, the Braves are on pace for their third straight 100-win season and then some. It’s highly unlikely their current pace will hold, but they are currently on pace for 114 wins.
There’s a long way to go, but it looks like it will take a lot to keep Atlanta from a seventh straight NL East title, and no one may be better equipped to take on and take down the loaded Los Angeles Dodgers.
Here’s a look at their latest World Series, NL pennant, and NL East odds, courtesy of BetOnline.

Hungry Bear Powering Prolific Plate Production for Atlanta
Through their first 17 games, the Braves are first in the majors in batting average (.294), runs per game (6.4), doubles (51), on-base percentage (.358), slugging percentage (.484), and OPS (.841).
The only area where Atlanta isn’t excelling at the moment is in the power department, as they are tied for 13th in MLB in home runs (20).
Reigning National League MVP Ronald Acuna Jr. only has one home run and six RBI, and Matt Olson hasn’t homered since April 7, but the first few weeks have been outstanding for Marcell Ozuna, a.k.a. “Ozuna from the Braves.”
The Big Bear is balling in a big way, hitting .352 with eight homers and 23 RBI. He leads the majors in RBI, is tied for first in homers, and is tied for ninth in batting average.
When Ozuna hit .085 in April last season, it looked like his days in Atlanta were nearing their end. But in 143 games since, he is hitting .304 with 31 doubles, 46 homers, 121 RBI, and 93 runs scored.
Thanks to Ozuna’s contributions, Atlanta has scored five or more runs in 13 of their 17 games.
Currently, the Braves are without second baseman Ozzie Albies (.317, 2 HR, 14 RBI), who will miss the next two to three weeks after suffering a fractured toe on Monday. But they scored six runs in Tuesday’s win over the Astros and five in Wednesday’s 10-inning, sweep-clinching victory, so expect them to survive without the three-time All-Star.

Bargain Bin Addition Lopez Aiding Atlanta Arms with Strider Sidelined
After leading MLB in wins (20) and strikeouts (281) last season, Spencer Strider finished fourth in NL Cy Young Award voting.
But instead of being able to make a run at a higher finish this season, Strider is now on the shelf until sometime in 2025 after undergoing elbow surgery.
With Strider sidelined and Max Fried (7.71 ERA, 1.96 WHIP in four starts) not off to his best start, there might be reason to worry.
But Atlanta has such good starting pitching depth that they can afford to have 2023 All-Star Bryce Elder hang out in the minors for the time being.
Early on, the standout starter is offseason addition Reynaldo Lopez. Lopez was primarily a starter for his first several MLB seasons but made 128 of his 129 appearances over the previous two seasons out of the bullpen.
But Atlanta signed him to a three-year, $26 million deal in November with plans to use him as a starter, and he won a place in the rotation in spring training.
From the looks of it, he may not be giving up that spot. Through his first three starts, he is 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA and has given up just one run, 11 hits, and six walks in 18 innings.
It remains to be seen if Lopez, who entered this season with a career record of 39-49, can continue to pitch well for the duration of the season. But if he does, he will be one of the bargains of the season.
