We had a good Game 1 between the Mercury and Lynx. Minnesota took game 1 by 7 points to lead the series 1-0. The Lynx lead at halftime by 14 points and the Mercury almost made the comeback.
Minnesota was the #1 team in the Western Conference this year, surprising most people. They had a 30-10 record and were 16-4 at home this season. In their last 10 games of the season, they were 8-2 despite losing the last game of the season to Sparks where they sat Collier and McBride.
For the Lynx, Napheesa Collier led the way for the Lynx with 38 points and also had 6 rebounds. Kayla McBride has a big game herself putting up 20 points and hitting 3 three pointers. Bridget Carleton contributed 12 points and Courtney Williams almost had a triple double.
It was important for Minnesota to get that Game 1 win and protect home court. They will need to do the same thing in Game 2 but will need to find answers for the Mercury guards, who combined for 70 points. There was a lot of scoring in Game 1 between these 2 teams and we should see the same again.
Can the Mercury find it in them to steal Game 2 on the road?
Phoenix is playing for their life, and they need to play like it. This is a good team that unfortunately started to slip the last portion of the season. They finished the season 19-21 and 4th in the Western Conference.
The Mercury went 3-4 in the month of September. They were 3-7 in their last 10 games of the season, including losing their last game to the Storm. Phoenix was also not the best road team this season, going 9-11 on the road.
It’s going to take a lot for the Mercury to win this game. They’re going to have to come out hot and early. If they can do that and protect whatever lead they make, then they should have a chance. This Lynx team ranks better than them in all offensive and defensive categories.
Playing a tight, smart game is going to be key for the Mercury. Protecting the ball could be the game changer for Phoenix. They turned the ball over the same number of times as Minnesota last game, so if they can cut back, it’ll give them an edge.
Let’s check out the odds and get into the picks.

The Lynx are not going to want to even travel to Phoenix. They can seal the deal tonight at home and I think that is just want they’re going to do. Minnesota has shown that they can beat this team by more than 9 points this season.
Defensively, the Lynx are one of the best teams in the league. They ranked 2nd in defensive rating this season. Getting back to their regular play of slowing the game down is exactly what they’ll need. They cannot afford to allow players like Diana Taurasi and Natasha Cloud to have such big games.
I think the Lynx do just this. Slow the game down and make the Mercury play Lynx basketball. You never know what you’re going to get in elimination games, so Phoenix could come out fired up, but the Lynx will as well and cool them off.
Napheesa Collier should get her points again. It will probably be set around 25-27 points, which she should clear easily. Playoff Napheesa has been activated and I think we see a monster these playoffs. The other play I like is Kayla McBride to hit 3 or more 3-pointers. She just did it in Game 1 and the Lynx will need her shooting to secure Game 2.
