Mystics vs Dream Prediction & Picks (6/11): A Baker’s Dozen for Washington?

After another fiercely contested but ultimately futile 40 minutes, the Washington Mystics are now 0 for 12 to open the 2024 WNBA season. Tonight, they will make yet another attempt to finally get that winning feeling as they visit Rhyne Howard and the Atlanta Dream (7:00 pm ET, MNMT).
On Sunday, the Mystics went into Barclays Center and gave the New York Liberty all they could handle for the third time this season. And for the third time this season, they fell short against the Liberty despite holding a lead in the fourth quarter.
This time, Washington led by five with just under nine minutes remaining before New York turned things around. Even after falling behind, the Mystics still had a chance to send the game to overtime, but Jade Melbourne—who had the best game of her young WNBA career—missed a game-tying three in the final seconds of an eventual 93-88 loss.
It was yet another encouraging but agonizing performance for the Mystics, who now have six losses by six or fewer points.
Will they have another such effort tonight against Atlanta? When the two teams met in D.C. on May 29, they played a close, low-scoring contest in a 73-67 Dream victory.

Washington Mystics vs Atlanta Dream Betting Analysis
As frustrating as it undoubtedly is to play hard time and time again only to have nothing tangible to show for it, the Mystics at least have a bit more losing to do to set a record.
Currently, the record for the most losses to begin a WNBA season belongs to the 2008 Atlanta Dream, who opened their first WNBA season with 17 consecutive losses before defeating the Chicago Sky for the franchise’s first win.
Like this year’s Mystics team, that debut Dream team competed but come up short several times before finally breaking through with a home win over the Sky.
As it happens, that’s who is up next for the Mystics, who will welcome Chicago to Entertainment and Sports Arena on Friday (7:30 pm ET, ION).
Will they still be searching for a win when Angel Reese and the Sky stroll into town?
The Dream are only 2-3 at home, while they are 3-1 on the road. Context is key here, however. One of their two home wins came over the Las Vegas Aces, and their three home losses are to the Minnesota Lynx, Connecticut Sun, and New York Liberty, who own the league’s three best records and are a combined 29-6.
However, there is major news on the injury front for the Mystics. Center Shakira Austin (hip), who has missed the last four games, is listed as questionable. The biggest news though is that guard Brittney Sykes (ankle) is listed as probable after missing the last ten games.
No, Washington isn’t going to suddenly turn into one of the WNBA’s better teams with a complete squad. But given the effort they have put in while shorthanded, the return of two of their best players is extremely encouraging for their prospects.
Do I think tonight will be a night of celebration and relief for the Mystics? No, that is more likely to be Friday. But they will once again give the Dream all they can handle, and Atlanta will have to put in a full 40 minutes to pick up win number six for the season.

Mystics vs Dream Picks
Washington Mystics team total over 75.5 points (-115 at Bovada)
After scoring 83 and 88 points in their last two games against the Fever and Liberty, I like the Mystics to have another productive night on the offensive end with Austin and Sykes back on the court.
