Not sure why, but we only have one game tonight and it’s the bottom of the barrel of the Western Conference. Last place Seattle Storm (6-20) will take on the second to last place Phoenix Mercury (7-19) at the Footprint Center in AZ.
Seattle, who has the worst record in the league, just hasn’t been able to click this year. They’re currently 2-8 in their last 10 games. They are also only 4-8 this season on the road.
The Storm in a nutshell just can’t shoot to save their lives. They’re shooting 40.6% from the field this season, which is worst in the league. They also rank 10th in the league for free throw percentage at 77.3%.
Seattle does have a star player in guard Jewell Loyd, who is carrying this team. She is averaging 24.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. She’s shooting 38.5% from the field and 40% from 3. She can move and get to the rim without a problem, so she will be the Mercury’s biggest challenge.
Let's talk about the Mercury now. They’re coming off a big win against vs the Dream in an historic night. Future Hall of Fame guard Diana Taurasi became the first player in WNBA History to record 10,000 points in a 20-point blowout win.
Taurasi, who put up a 40 piece, was buzzing last night vs the home crowd. She hit 12 of 21 from the field while being perfect from the charity stripe and 6/13 from 3 point range. Congratulations to her on this historic milestone!
The Storm may only have 6 wins, but 2 were against the Mercury. The 2 teams have met three times this season and the Storms wins were by double digits. The first game was the first game of the season where the Mercury won by 6 points.
Their second matchup was June 13th and the Storm won by 14 points. Seattle was able to shutdown Taurasi and Griner holding them to a combined 2 points.
The third game was a 23-point blowout by the Storm on June 24th. They will look to replicate their last 2 performances against the Mercury tonight.
Will the Mercury be hungover after Taurasi’s milestone night?
It was a big night for the Mercury, and they showed out. Big night aside, they have struggled this year vs the Storm. The Mercury rank last in the league in points per game, pace and rebounds.
Their other biggest problem is they don’t protect the ball. They are last in the league, averaging 16 turnovers per game. They rank last for steals per game and 10th for defensive rating, so they struggle on both sides of the ball.
Taurasi has Sophie Cunningham and Brittney Griner alongside her leading this team. Griner currently leads the team with 18.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.
The Mercury are 4-6 in their last 10 games and are 6-6 at home this season. One of the 2 games the Mercury dropped to Seattle was in Phoenix too. This will have to get things rolling from last game to get the win.

Seattle Storm and Phoenix Mercury Predictions and Picks
Pick: Storm +3.5 (-118)
Since neither team really shines, I have to go with history in this matchup. The Storm have proven twice that they can beat the Mercury and by more than a few points.
I don’t see Phoenix over coming any of their struggles just because of 1 game. They gained momentum from it, but not enough. They’ve also showed they struggle against the Storm twice this year.
They played a great game and showed they can contend, but they did it for a player's personal milestone. It makes me wonder why they haven’t played like that all year. They even played a tough team in the Atlanta Dream and won with ease.
This line doesn’t make any sense to me other than the books going off the Mercury’s momentum. Give me the Storm to continue their strong play vs the Mercury and cover the 3.5 points.
Pick: Under 160.5 (-113)
The last game these 2 teams played went over but was also a blowout by the Storm. The first 2 games went under and comfortably by this number, with 148 and 152 being the totals.
Both teams rank in the bottom of the league for points per game and offensive rating. Their combines averages on the year total 155 points per game.
I think this line is right where it should be based on the past games and their current points per game. I think a hung-over Mercury team combined with the poor shooting Storm team is the recipe we need for the under to hit.
