Liberty vs Lynx Prediction & Picks (5/25): Will New York Bounce Back at Minnesota?

Last night may well have been the last NBA game this season at the Target Center in Minneapolis, but the WNBA action is just heating up. Today, Napheesa Collier and the Lynx will welcome former UConn teammate Breanna Stewart and the New York Liberty to town for an intriguing afternoon matchup (1:00 pm ET, CBS).

The Liberty (4-1) will be looking to rebound after shockingly suffering their first loss of the season Thursday. They were favored by more than two touchdowns at home against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky but instead fell 90-81.

The Lynx (2-1) also suffered their first loss of the season on Thursday, but it wasn’t on the same scale as New York’s. They had every chance to come away victorious in their road matchup with the Connecticut Sun and even led by five in overtime, but two late free throws saw the hosts pull out an 83-82 win.

Last season, the road team won all three matchups between the Liberty and Lynx. Will we see the same result this afternoon? New York is favored by a healthy margin, but Minnesota has impressed so far this season.

Is there anything to read into New York’s loss to Chicago?

In a long season, bad nights and upsets are bound to happen. But on the offensive end, the Liberty, who shot only 43.5%, did not have their best night. Stewart was only 5 of 12 from the field and made only 2 of 6 from three, while Sabrina Ionescu was 8 of 20 from the field and made only two of her eight three-point attempts.

Defensively, the Liberty allowed 11 offensive rebounds, and the Sky attempted 75 shots, making 46.7% of them, including 36.8% from three. Both of those percentages are season worsts for New York.

This afternoon’s matchup could prove to be an even trickier one for New York. Minnesota may have lost at Connecticut on Thursday, but it’s notable that they came within seconds of a win at Mohegan Sun Arena despite making only 4 of 21 (19.0%) from three and getting only 23 minutes from Alanna Smith, who fouled out with 2:43 left in regulation.

After being one of the worst defensive teams in the WNBA last season, early returns this season are mostly positive for the Lynx. Can they maintain it for the duration of the season? We will see, but the Liberty won’t have it easy today, even if they leave the Target Center with a win.
