After losing three consecutive regular season games for the first time in nearly five years, the Las Vegas Aces find themselves in an unfamiliar place. Will their slide end tonight against the Phoenix Mercury (10:00 pm ET, Amazon Prime Video), or will they wade into even more unfamiliar waters with another loss?
Tuesday, the Minnesota Lynx went into Michelob Ultra Arena and hit the century mark in a 100-86 win over the two-time defending champions. The Lynx shot 55.2% from the field and 55.6% from three, and all five of their starters scored in double figures.
This is the first time that the Aces (5-5) have lost three straight regular season games since August 2019, when they fell on the road to the Sun, Lynx, and Fever.
Things don’t stand to get any easier tonight against the Mercury (6-6). Phoenix has won consecutive games since Brittney Griner took the court after missing the first ten games of the season.
Without Griner, Phoenix pushed Las Vegas all the way in a season-opening loss at Michelob Ultra Arena. The following week, they returned to Sin City and won by ten in a major upset.
Are the champs staring at another upset tonight? Or will they dig deep and get a much-needed win ahead of a huge three-game homestand?

Las Vegas Aces vs Phoenix Mercury Betting Analysis
Have the Aces suddenly dropped from the ranks of the contenders? No, but if they don’t curb their current struggles quickly, things will get worse before they get better.
The absence of Chelsea Gray remains a very glaring issue and will continue to be until she returns. But defense has now let the Aces down on multiple occasions this season.
When the Mercury won in Vegas on May 21, they made 16 threes and shot 48.5% from outside in a 98-88 win. Similarly, the Sparks (10 of 25, 40% in a 96-92 win) and Lynx (15 of 27, 55.6%) shot well from outside in their wins over the Aces.
Over their two championship-winning seasons, the Aces have given up a lot of points from time to time, but their offensive prowess countered it. Without Gray, that hasn’t been the case.
No team takes more threes than the Mercury, who are averaging 29.7 attempts per game and making 9.8. That comes out to 32.9%, which is seventh in the WNBA. The overall percentage isn’t fantastic, but in Kahleah Copper and Diana Taurasi, Phoenix has two shooters that can light it up on any given night.
That shooting has played a key role in the first two matchups between the two teams. Along with their efforts in the win on May 21, Phoenix was 15 of 36 (41.7%) from outside in a season-opening 89-80 loss to the Aces. In that opener, Taurasi was 7 of 11 from three, while Copper made 3 of 7. That helped keep the Mercury in the game until the Aces closed things out by scoring the final six points.
With the talent that the champs bring to the table even with Gray sidelined, it’s hard not to take the optimistic view and back them to get things right sooner rather than later. That would certainly be the ideal outcome, given that they follow tonight’s contest with a three-game homestand against the Liberty (11-2), Storm (8-4), and Sun (11-1).
It won’t come easy, however. The Mercury are in a good spot right now, and they had two outstanding efforts against the Aces without Griner. Look for the two teams to put up a lot of points again but for the visiting team to head home happy, or at least relieved.
