Wings vs Mercury Prediction & Picks (5/25): A Fantastic Four for Phoenix?

Two teams experiencing different results without key players will meet to close out today’s WNBA slate. At the Footprint Center in Phoenix, the Mercury (3-1) will host the Dallas Wings (1-2), with tip time scheduled for 10:00 pm ET/7:00 pm local time.
With Brittney Griner sidelined with a fractured toe, it seemed likely that the Mercury would not fare well, especially after finishing with the WNBA’s worst record last season.
But after giving a good account of themselves in their season-opening loss to the Las Vegas Aces, the Mercury have won three straight games. That includes a 98-88 win at Michelob Ultra Arena in their rematch with the Aces on Tuesday.
While things couldn’t be much better for the Mercury, the Wings are struggling without Satou Sabally (offseason shoulder surgery). The former Oregon star may be out until after the Olympic break, and she is sorely missed right now.
They opened the season with a home win over the Chicago Sky but dropped the rematch with the Sky three days later, and last time out, they fell 83-78 at Atlanta on Tuesday.
It’s still very early in the season, so where some teams are is not where they will be when the business end of the season comes. Still, a 1-3 start is not what the Wings would have envisioned at this point, so tonight’s game in Phoenix carries a lot of importance.

Dallas Wings vs Phoenix Mercury Betting Analysis
You certainly can’t replace Griner, but the Mercury have done a fantastic job thus far of filling the void left by her absence offensively and defensively.
Last year, Griner (6.3 RPG) and Briana Turner (6.3 RPG) were the only two Mercury players to average four or more rebounds per game. Through four games this season, five Phoenix players are averaging at least 4.8 RPG, led by Natasha Mack’s 8.3 RPG.
Offensively, the addition of Kahleah Copper looks like it might be the best move of the offseason. In her last year with the Chicago Sky, the 2021 WNBA Finals MVP averaged a career-high 18.7 PPG and shot a career-best 40.4% from three.
Her current form may taper off, but she is well on her way to blowing those numbers out of the water. She went for 38 points in a win over the Atlanta Dream last Saturday and 37 more in Tuesday’s win over the Aces and is averaging 28.5 PPG while shooting 50.6% from the field, 46.7% from three, and 87.0% from the foul line.
Also, the ageless Diana Taurasi continues to motor along and provide a major impact for Phoenix. She had 23 in the season opener against the Aces and 20 in Thursday’s 83-80 win over the Washington Mystics.
While the Mercury have a lot to feel good about right now, the Wings are struggling to get going.
Without Sabally, Dallas is even more reliant on Arike Ogunbowale to be accurate and not just prolific. In three games, she has scored 25, 35, and 24 points, but she is shooting just 38.0% from the field and 32.1% from three while averaging 23.7 field goal attempts and 9.3 three-point attempts per game.
She might well have more success tonight against a Mercury team that is ninth in the WNBA in three-point defense, but will it be enough to prevent a third straight loss? I don’t think so.
Dallas Wings vs Phoenix Mercury Prediction & Picks
Wings vs Mercury Prediction: Mercury to win
Wings vs Mercury Picks: 1) Mercury -4, 2) Arike Ogunbowale over 3.5 made threes (+155 at Bovada), 3) Arike Ogunbowale over 24.5 points (-125 at Bovada), 4) Kahleah Copper over 2.5 made threes (+105 at Bovada)
In line with the pick from today’s WNBA player props piece, taking the over on Copper’s made threes prop is one of the best moves you can make right now. We’ll see how long this early success continues, but until it tapers off or the odds adjust, take, take, take.
