With the first two days of the US Open in the books, it’s now time to look ahead to the second round, which will take place today and tomorrow.
The big names and most of the seeded and favored players in the men’s and singles draws safely advanced, but there were quite a few upsets on Monday and Tuesday.
The most notable men’s singles result saw #4 seed Holger Rune, who reached the quarterfinals at both the French Open and Wimbledon this year, fall in four sets to Roberto Carballes Baena.
On the women’s side, two of the top ten seeds fell in the first round.
Seventh seed Caroline Garcia, who reached the semifinals of last year’s US Open, was sent packing in straight sets by Yafan Wang, while #8 seed Maria Sakkari fell in straight sets to Rebeka Masarova.
Entering the second round, 23 of 32 seeded players in the men’s singles draw are still alive, while 24 of 32 seeded players in the women’s singles draw have at least one more match to look forward to.
Is another winning set of US Open picks ahead? All four of my picks for the first round hit, with Caroline Wozniacki, Ekaterina Alexandrova, and Tamara Korpatsch (times two) all coming through.
After focusing on women’s singles for my picks for the first round, both men’s and women’s singles feature in my picks for the second round.

Day 3 – Wednesday, August 30
#4 Elena Rybakina vs Ajla Tomljanovic Prediction & Pick: Rybakina to Win & Under 19.5 Games
After reaching the quarters at Wimbledon and the US Open last year, Tomljanovic missed the first three Grand Slams this season due to knee issues. Prior to Monday’s three-set win over Panna Udvardy, she hadn’t played a match since last November.
Given that her injury layoff occurred just when she was producing some of the best singles results of her career, it was great to see Tomljanovic make a triumphant return to the court.
However, her time at the US Open is likely to be short.
Rybakina, the #4 seed in the women’s singles draw, opened the tournament with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Marta Kostyuk, which took only 84 minutes. Tomljanovic might prove to be a bit harder to dispatch than Kostyuk, but I expect Rybakina to get this one done in straight sets and under 19.5 games, which comes in at -115 at Bovada.
Juan Pablo Varillas vs #9 Taylor Fritz Prediction & Pick: Fritz to Win & Under 29.5 Games
Fritz, the highest-seeded American player in the men’s singles draw, began his tournament by breezing past fellow American Steve Johnson 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 on Monday.
With a win over Varillas, who upset Miomir Kecmanovic in four sets in the first round, the number nine seed will match his best US Open result, which he achieved in 2018 and 2020.
Varillas was very impressive in his win over Kecmanovic, storming back to win the final three sets after going down 6-1 in the first set. But Fritz should see him off in straight sets, and if he takes care of business in his service games, he will need only a few breaks to get the job done in under 29.5 games, which is decent value at -105 odds.
Day 4 – Thursday, August 31
Andy Murray vs #19 Grigor Dimitrov Prediction & Pick: Murray to Win & Over 39 Games
There’s a good chance that this match will be one of the longest of the second round of the US Open, so the over 39 games at -115 odds was one of the first picks that jumped out at me when looking over odds for today and tomorrow.
In the first round, Dimitrov, the #19 seed, needed five sets and 58 games to advance past Alex Molcan 6-7 (9-11), 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 7-5, 7-6 (11-9). It took four hours and 40 minutes to finally claim the win, and he had to survive three match points in the process.
Though Dimitrov is coming off of a marathon match, there’s no real rhyme or reason for this pick other than it just feels like a match that will go five sets and 4+ hours. Even four sets could be enough to do the trick if there are a couple of extended sets.
Petra Martic vs #31 Maria Bouzkova Prediction & Pick: Maria Bouzkova to Win in Straight Sets (+130)
My final pick for the second round came down to this match or Alexandrova’s matchup with Lesia Tsurenko.
I think we’ll see three sets in that match and favor over 21 games (currently -120 at Bovada), but for my pick here, I’m going with the better value odds-wise.
Martic had a nice 6-2, 6-1 win over Tatjana Maria in the first round, as she needed only 67 minutes to defeat the 2022 Wimbledon semifinalist, who had been playing fairly well prior to the US Open.
However, she has found it rather difficult to have sustained success on this surface this year. Since reaching the final in Linz, Austria in February, she has not won more than one match in six hard court tournaments.
Bouzkova had a challenging match against American wildcard Ashlyn Krueger in the first round, but she ultimately advanced in straight sets with a 7-5, 6-4 win.
Bouzkova may well not win 6-4, 6-2 like she did when she met Martic in Monterrey, Mexico last year, but I think she will be able to wrap it up in straight sets.
