After years of trying, Jessica Pegula has broken through and reached her first Grand Slam singles semifinal. Can she go at least one step further and reach her first Grand Slam singles final? She will enter tonight’s US Open semifinal contest with Karolina Muchova (8:30 pm ET, ESPN) as the favorite.
Entering last night’s matchup with world number one Iga Swiatek, Pegula was 0 for 6 in Grand Slam singles quarterfinals. But she put that history behind her with an outstanding performance against the top seed, needing only 89 minutes to see off Swiatek in a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
She doesn’t have much time to celebrate the biggest moment of her singles career, as the #6 seed in the draw will take on Muchova fewer than 24 hours after the final point of her win over Swiatek.
While this is Pegula’s first Grand Slam singles semifinal, Muchova is making her fourth such appearance and her second straight at the US Open.
Quite a lot has happened since she lost to Coco Gauff at this stage of last year’s tournament. Due to a wrist injury and subsequent surgery, that 6-4, 7-5 loss to Gauff on September 7 of last year was her last match until June of this year, and this is just her sixth tournament since her return.
Will she play spoiler against a certain crowd favorite and reach her second Grand Slam singles final? Or will Pegula’s moment continue into a matchup for all the marbles against fellow American Emma Navarro or tournament favorite Aryna Sabalenka?

Pegula vs Muchova Betting Analysis
Pegula is the favorite, but the margin indicates how little there is between the two players.
When they met at the Cincinnati Open a few weeks ago, Muchova took the first set, but an inability to hold her serve in the second set—she was broken in her last three games of the set—saw the match go the distance, and she ran out of steam in the third set.
While a lot of the focus will be on how impressive Pegula has been in the tournament, the same can be said for Muchova.
She needed only 69 minutes to eliminate Paolini in the fourth round and 83 minutes to take out Haddad Maia, and she has been able to reach this stage for the second straight year despite battling illness.
That caused a brief delay in last night’s win over the #22 seed, but it clearly didn’t affect her game at all. Therefore, it shouldn’t be a concern for tonight’s match, especially considering what she has dealt with since she was last here.
Pegula vs Muchova Prediction & Picks
Muchova’s illness, as well as this being only her 18th match since her nine-and-a-half-month layoff, may give some bettors pause.
However, she has been every bit as good as Pegula has in this tournament, and it will not be an upset in the slightest if she comes away with the victory. After all, she was a top-ten player when she was injured and appeared destined to rise even higher. Now that her wrist woes are behind her, she is displaying that level again, and Pegula will have to bring her best tonight to win.
Their previous encounter went the distance, and there’s a good chance that this one will as well. If it is wrapped up in straight sets, expect two very competitive sets.
But who will come out on top and move on to face Navarro or Sabalenka on Saturday? There are compelling reasons to back either side here, but Pegula gets the nod. It was reasonable to question if she could rise to the occasion against Swiatek, but the manner in which she did so is a sign that this may indeed be her major moment.
Pegula vs Muchova Prediction: Pegula to win
Pegula vs Muchova Picks: 1) Pegula -2.5 games, 2) Pegula/Muchova over 22.5 games
