An exciting week at the ATP BMW Open in Munich continued on Friday, with the top two remaining seeds both exiting in the quarterfinals. What is in store for today’s semifinal matches?
Basilashvili, Otte, Rune, and van de Zandschulp advance to Saturday’s semis with straight-sets wins
Yesterday, defending champion and #4 seed Nikoloz Basilashvili was ousted by #7 Miomir Kecmanovic, who finally ended his run of failing to make it past the quarters.
This was the sixth straight tournament in which Kecmanovic had reached the quarters, and after losing in the last eight five straight times, he finally picked up a win. And it was an impressive one as well, as he beat Basilashvili 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 in just an hour and 28 minutes.
Basilashvili’s loss was not an upset, as Kecmanovic was favored, nor were two of the other results. In the top half of the draw, rising clay-court star Holger Rune dispatched Emil Ruusuvuori 6-0, 6-2 in just 62 minutes, while Oscar Otte continued his great week in Munich by downing Alejandro Tabilo 6-1, 7-6 (7-1).
The day’s lone upset took out the remaining favorite, as #8 seed Botic van de Zandschulp dispatched #2 seed Casper Ruud 7-5, 6-1. For someone who is expected to be a contender at the upcoming French Open, Ruud’s current clay form leaves something to be desired, but perhaps he will get back on track next week in Madrid.
Here’s how the tournament odds shake out with Ruud eliminated:

2022 BMW Open Semifinals Predictions and Picks
Miomir Kecmanovic vs. Botic van de Zandschulp
In this matchup, Kecmanovic will be seeking his third ATP main tour final, while van de Zandschulp will be seeking his first.
The two players are separated by just a couple of spots in the current ATP rankings, with Kecmanovic coming in at 38th and van de Zandschulp at 40th.
With 105 points separating van de Zandschulp and 31st-ranked Albert Ramos Vinolas and three more weeks of tournaments to go until the French Open, these two players are among a large group in the mix to land in the seeds at Roland Garros.
With that in mind, this is an important match for both of these players. There are 250 ATP ranking points on offer for the tournament winner and 150 for the losing finalist, but only 90 for losing in the semis.
They met just last month at Indian Wells, and it was a hotly contested match in the round of 32, with Kecmanovic picking up a 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 win.
While the 22-year-old has not had a lot of luck with getting to semis and finals, it has been a pretty solid year for him. He reached the quarters at both of the recent ATP Masters 1000 tournaments in the U.S. (Indian Wells and Miami), reached the last 16 of the Australian Open, and as mentioned above, has gotten to at least the quarters in six straight tournaments.
This week, Kecmanovic has won all three of his matches in straight sets, and the first set against Basilashvili is the only extended set he has had so far.
There’s a lot to like about van de Zandschulp’s run in Munich as well, especially his comfortable win over Ruud. But based on Kecmanovic’s current form, the favorite is well worth backing here.
Kecmanovic vs. van de Zandschulp Prediction and Picks
Kecmanovic vs. van de Zandschulp Prediction: Kecmanovic to win in straight sets
Best Match Pick: Miomir Kecmanovic -2.5 games (-117 at BetUS)
Best Value Pick: Miomir Kecmanovic to win in straight sets (+145 at BetOnline)
Holger Rune vs. Oscar Otte
Rune celebrated his 19th birthday in style yesterday with his third consecutive straight-sets win in Munich, and he could make it an even better birthday stretch by reaching his first ATP main tour final.
Rune is a big-time prospect on clay, with four ATP Challenger titles on the surface already. After upsetting #1 seed Alexander Zverev on Wednesday, he didn’t lose his focus, brushing aside Ruusuvuori even more clinically than he did the world number three.
As with the other three semifinalists, Otte has won all three of his matches this week in straight sets. That includes Thursday’s round of 16 win over 17th-ranked Reilly Opelka, who was the #3 seed in Munich.
While Otte also has yet to make an ATP main tour final, he is no stranger to finals, having made 23 singles finals and 25 doubles finals on the ATP Challenger and ITF circuits.
Unfortunately, his wait for a main tour final will continue. After dropping nine games in his opening match against Jiri Lehecka, Rune dropped only seven total games against Zverev and Ruusuvuori. Look for his sizzling form to take him through to tomorrow’s final.
