Djokovic’s Early Exit Highlights Upset-Filled Week at Monte-Carlo
Along with Rafael “King of Clay” Nadal and Daniil Medvedev both being absent for the tournament as they race to be fit for next month’s French Open, #1 seed Novak Djokovic, who was playing in only his second tournament of the season, was booted out in his first match by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
In addition to Djokovic’s early exit, five other top-eight seeds have already been bounced, in #4 Casper Ruud (round of 16 to unseeded Dimitrov), #5 Andrey Rublev (round of 16 to Sinner), #6 Felix Auger-Aliassime (round of 32 to unseeded Lorenzo Musetti), #7 Cameron Norrie (round of 32 to unseeded Alberto Ramos-Vinolas), and #8 Carlos Alcaraz (round of 32 to unseeded Sebastian Korda), who was coming off of a Miami Open title in his previous tournament.
But #2 seed Zverev and #3 seed Tsitsipas are both still alive and on course to meet in the semis, and four other seeded players are also in the quarter-final draw. Both Zverev and Tsitsipas have won their first two ATP Monte-Carlo 2022 matches in straight sets
2022 Monte-Carlo Masters Men’s Singles Quarter-Final Betting Picks
Odds mentioned in the below picks are via top sportsbooks that we recommend for betting on tennis and other sports.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina vs. #10 Taylor Fritz
Davidovich Fokina vs. Fritz Match Odds
- Alejandro Davidovich Fokina +112
- Taylor Fritz -130
Pick: Davidovich Fokina to win – This is an unexpected run for Davidovich Fokina, both because he lost in his first match in Marrakech, Morocco last week and because he had to upset Djokovic on his way to the Monte-Carlo quarters.
But clay is his best surface, and at plus odds, the young Spaniard is great value to keep the good vibes rolling into the semis.
Grigor Dimitrov vs. #11 Hubert Hurkacz
Dimitrov vs. Hurkacz Match Odds
- Grigor Dimitrov +114
- Hubert Hurkacz -132
Pick #1: OVER 21.5 Games (-135 at Bovada Sportsbook) – The total is 22.5 at BetOnline, but it is listed at 21.5 at Bovada, and the over is at shorter odds than the over 22.5 is at BetOnline (-140).
Hurkacz has not historically thrived on clay, and this is his first appearance in the quarters of an ATP event. He has been playing good tennis lately, making the semis twice in his previous three tournaments. So, even though clay is not his best surface, his current form is encouraging for the tournaments to come.
But Dimitrov has had the upper hand against three solid opponents this week, and when he is at his best, he can hang with just about anyone. Look for him to, at the very least, make Hurkacz work for his third semi in four tournaments.
Pick #2: Dimitrov to win the 1st set (+110 at BetOnline Sportsbook) – Dimitrov has been in the last eight at the Monte-Carlo Masters more than he has any of the other ATP 1000 tournaments, with this being his fourth appearance into this round in his career.
He lost the first set in his second match against the experienced Dusan Lajovic, but he took the first set off of Ruud and off of first round opponent Nikoloz Basilashvili, the world’s 20th-ranked player.
Even if he does lose, it’s hard to see him coming up completely empty-handed against Hurkacz, given that this is a pretty even matchup when Dimitrov is playing at the level that he has this week.
#9 Jannik Sinner vs. #2 Alexander Zverev
Sinner vs. Zverev Match Odds
- Jannik Sinner +172
- Alexander Zverev -205
Pick: Sinner to win the first set (+150 at BetOnline Sportsbook & BetUS) – Sinner’s last two tournaments have ended with a walkover (vs. Nick Kyrgios in the round of 16 at Indian Wells) and a retirement (vs. Francisco Cerundolo in the quarters in Miami).
So even though he has beaten Zverev on clay before (in four sets at the French Open in 2020), and he is having a good week in this tournament, there’s a little hesitation in backing him with great confidence.
However, there isn’t a ton of value in the Zverev moneyline, and backing him with any of the set or game lines doesn’t really generate a lot of warm and fuzzy feelings. In a situation like this, when the underdog is easily capable of taking at least a set off of the favorite, my personal preference is to play the first set and go from there.
#12 Diego Schwartzman vs. #3 Stefanos Tsitsipas
Schwartzman vs. Tsitsipas Match Odds
- Diego Schwartzman +235
- Stefanos Tsitsipas -290
Pick: OVER 21.5 Games (-107 at BetUS) – In his round of 16 win over Laslo Djere, Tsitsipas won in straight sets, but it didn’t come easy, as he won 7-5, 7-6 (7-1).
Schwartzman has played two three-set matches in three Monte-Carlo Masters matches, and in his lone straight-sets win, he had to win a second-set tiebreak against Marton Fucsovics. He’s good enough on this surface to challenge Tsitsipas and extend both sets, at minimum.
If you want the best number possible without completely sacrificing betting value, over 20.5 is available at -137 at BetUS. That is the safer choice, but I feel pretty comfortable taking some risk with the over 21.5.
