Weather interrupted the action on day three of the ATP Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, but it proved to be a better-than-expected day for favorites at the tournament, at least if you were hoping to see more upsets.
Of the nine matches that were completed, the only betting underdog to win was Lloyd Harris, who upset #17 seed Alberto Ramos Vinolas in straight sets. Ramos Vinolas was one of four seeded players to be sent packing on Wednesday, with the other three–#9 Nikoloz Basilashvili, #15 Federico Delbonis, and #16 Alexander Bublik–all underdogs in their matches.
Two matches were left unfinished due to the weather, as #14 Grigor Dimitrov and unseeded Federico Coria were in the third set and #1 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and unseeded Ilya Ivashka were through six games of the first set when the day prematurely ended.
Though the weather was certainly disappointing, it did bring about this cute moment with Tsitsipas and a ballgirl, who is probably still smiling about her good fortune at this moment.
So, what lies ahead for day four of this week’s ATP 500 event? Along with the unfinished two second-round matches, the full round of 16 will take place on Thursday.
Or it was supposed to, at least.
Wet Weather Forces Frantic Friday in Barcelona
Instead, the weather affected action for the second straight day. As a result, only the two unfinished matches from Wednesday were completed. Dimitrov finished off Coria 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, while Tsitsipas dropped a set but moved on with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win over Ivashka.
So, that means that Friday is going to be a day of double duty for eight players, as the round of 16 and quarters are both set to take place today.
Rain is not in the Friday forecast for Barcelona, so there should be no issues with getting the day’s play in.
However, with more rain set for Saturday, Sunday–which is not supposed to feature any of the wet stuff–could very well be another double-duty day with the semis and finals. So, keep an eye on the weather.
Here’s a look at Friday’s schedule (in Barcelona time), and below, we take a look at the odds for today’s round of 16 matches.

ATP Barcelona 2022 Predictions and Picks for Day Five
The below picks were set for Thursday’s scheduled round of 16 action. But since all of the matches were pushed back to Friday, the picks and thoughts are simply carrying over to today.
ATP Barcelona 2022 Day Five Predictions
Round of 16 Matches
Winners: Carreno Busta (in straight sets), Ruud (in straight sets), Schwartzman (in three sets), Tiafoe (in three sets), de Minaur (in three sets), Alcaraz (in three sets), Norrie (in straight sets), Tsitsipas (in straight sets)
Quarter-Final Matches
Winners: Tsitsipas over Alcaraz in three sets, Norrie over de Minaur in straight sets, Schwartzman over Tiafoe in straight sets, Carreno Busta over Ruud in three sets
Which Favorites Are in Trouble in the Round of 16?
Schwartzman and Musetti are facing off in the round of 16 for the second straight week, and though Schwartzman is the favorite, Musetti will go in knowing he can beat him.
In fact, he should have last week at the Monte-Carlo Masters, but he let Schwartzman off the hook. Musetti was up 6-2, 2-0 in the match, but Schwartzman rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win.
That is the most obvious answer as to which favorite is most likely to lose, but there are a few other notable possibilities.
Carreno Busta may be in for a tight match with Sonego in a matchup between two seeded players. Carreno Busta dispatched fellow Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles 6-3, 6-3 on Wednesday, but Sonego should pose more of a challenge.
The Spaniard, who is ranked 19th in the latest ATP rankings, has 180 ranking points to defend after reaching the semifinals at last year’s Barcelona Open. So, he needs to win this match and then a quarter-final matchup against either Ruud or Ruusuvuori to match that result.
Outside of those two matches, the Munar vs. Alcaraz matchup could be one to watch. Yesterday, Alcaraz needed three sets to put away Soonwoo Kwon, who isn’t a stellar clay player, and he should have his hands even fuller with Munar.
Munar beat Alcaraz last year in the semifinals of the 2021 Andalucia Open, an ATP 250 event in Marbella, Spain, and took the first set off of him in a clay-court matchup earlier this year at the Rio Open in Brazil.
Where is the Best Betting Value?
Best ATP Barcelona Value Pick of the Day:
Munar vs. Alcaraz – both players to win a set (+168 at BetOnline Sportsbook)
Given his previous results against Alcaraz, this is excellent value. You can also snag Munar to win a set at +114, which is a safer move as it rules out a loss if Munar does the unlikely and takes down Alcaraz in straight sets.
Best ATP Barcelona Bets of the Day:
Frances Tiafoe to win a set (-160), over 11.5 games won (-134), and +3.5 games (-136) vs. Felix Auger-Aliassime – all at BetOnline Sportsbook
In case you were here for yesterday’s picks, no, I am not picking on FAA by backing his opponent to have some success two days in a row.
But Carlos Taberner did take a set off of him, and had he won more than one game in the first set, over 11.5 games won for Taberner would have been a winner as well.
Clay certainly isn’t Tiafoe’s best surface, but he opened his clay season by winning two matches and reaching the quarters of the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships two weeks ago in Houston, Texas.
He followed up that showing by taking care of business against Hugo Dellien in his opener in Barcelona yesterday.
Dellien is a pretty accomplished singles player on clay at the ATP Challenger level, with eight titles and 13 finals to his name. So, it was no surprise to see him push Tiafoe to a tiebreak in the first set. But after winning the tiebreaker 7-3, Tiafoe dominated the second set, winning 6-1 to close out the win.
FAA isn’t strong on clay, and he isn’t playing his best tennis right now either. Tiafoe is good value to take the win in this one, but these are all good bets if you don’t want to take that route.
For what it’s worth, Tiafoe to win a set came in at -148 odds yesterday but has shifted to -160, which is not an ideal number. But the same confidence remains, so the pick remains as well.
