We are down to three.
Spain punched their ticket to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final with a 2-1 win over Sweden early this morning.
Overnight in Australia, the hosts take on the Lionesses of England to meet the Spaniards in the final early Sunday morning.
Let’s see how these two squads got here and break down the match!
Australia & England World Cup Recap
The Matildas
Our hosts opened up play by beating Ireland 1-0 on a PK in the 52nd minute. In their next match, they fell to Nigeria 3-2, who would end up advancing to face England in the Round of 16.
Australia desperately needed a win to seal the group, and they got it against Canada, 4-0, eliminating them from the tournament. The Matildas won Group B with 6 points, and faced Denmark in the knockout round.
Sam Kerr has only seen roughly 80 minutes of pitch time this tournament, and yet Australia has still found success.
They beat Denmark 2-0 and faced France in the Quarterfinals.
After playing to a nil-nil draw, the Matildas advanced on PKs 7-6 and face England for a chance to play for a World Cup Title in their own country.
Euro 2022 Champions
However, the Lionesses have tons of momentum right now, and they don’t plan on slowing down.
They beat 2nd ranked Germany in the 2022 Euros, and now they want their first World Cup Title.
They swept group play, allowing just 1 goal while scoring 8, but did see a little trouble against Nigeria in the Round of 16. Much like out friends Australia did.
England played Nigeria to a nil-nil draw, and advance on PKs 4-2.
They faced Colombia in the Quarterfinals and actually found themselves down 1-0 in the 44th minute. England rallied and tied the game deep in stoppage time before halftime.
Almost twenty minutes into the second half, the Lionesses found the back of the net again and held on the win 2-1.
Early tomorrow morning, they face off against our hosts, both hoping to go to their first Women’s World Cup Final.
England lost in the semifinals in both 2015 and 2019, while Australia has never gotten this far.
Only one will advance, who will it be?

Australia vs England Prediction & Best Bets
Before I begin, I’d just like to say my picks in this tournament have been atrocious.
So take all of these with a grain of salt, and tail with caution as you always should.
But here we go.
Australia, thanks for playing.
The 4th ranked Lionesses are the hottest team in women’s international soccer right now. They are unbeaten in their last 10 competitive matches, and their last “loss” was a friendly to the Matildas in May of 2023.
However, Kerr played 94 minutes that game, and she hasn’t seen more than 60 in a match this tournament. It will be interesting to see if she gets the start in this do or die game.
The Pick: England to Advance (-143) Bovada
I’ll be playing the juiceman on the Lionesses to advance. Australia held France scoreless for 120 minutes, and I could see them at least doing the same to England for at least 90.
Australia should come out defensive, just trying to hold England on their half. The Lionesses will be patient and will wait for tired legs in extra time to seal the deal.
With that in mind, I do have these two long shot sprinkles.
- England in Extra Time (+900)
- England in Shootout (+875)
Let’s see if we can get one to go through.
