The Women’s Olympic Soccer tournament has reached it’s final two matches, as the Bronze Medal Match takes place early Friday morning. Spain and Germany kick off at 9:00am Eastern to see who will go home with some hardware. Both teams have battled all tournament and lost in heartbreaking fashion in the Semifinals, both to teams they had seen before. Germany was unable to get revenge on the United States, losing in Extra Time and ending up in this third place match. Spain faced Brazil whom they had already beaten in Group Stage, but this time, things were different. In a six goal thriller, Brazil beat the 2023 World Cup Champions 4-2, and moved on to face the US for the Gold Medal.
However, we still need to decide third place, and we’ve got two of the world’s best going at it. Spain ranks 1st in the World while Germany is 4th in the FIFA Rankings. The Spanish swept their group, winning all 3 matches and conceding just one goal in the process. But things got shaky in the knockout rounds. Spain found themselves down 2-nil to Colombia in the Quarterfinals, but rallied for a couple of late goals to force Extra Time, eventually advancing on PKs. Against Brazil in the Semis, they were simply outplayed.
Germany finished 2nd in their group, beating Australia and Zambia, but losing to the United States 4-1. Germany played a scoreless bout against the defending Gold Medalists, eventually beating Canada on Penalty Kicks. Facing the US again in the Semifinals, Germany played very tough defense, but ultimately fell short, losing 1-0 in Extra Time.
Can they rally to take down the World Cup Champions and claim Bronze? Or will Spain beat Germany and claim their first medal in Women’s Soccer at the Olympics?

Can Germany’s Back Line Take on Spain’s Attack?
Spain has had no trouble scoring goals this tournament. They’ve netted two in every match except their 1-0 defeat of Nigeria, and they are creating a substantial amount of chances. This team is just as good as the squad that won the 2023 World Cup, and they certainly have their sights set on bringing home a medal. However, if any defense can stop them, it’s Germany.
Germany has only allowed 6 goals in 5 matches this Olympics, but 5 came courtesy of the United States. Germany shutout Australia 3-0, beat Zambia 4-1, and held Canada scoreless. They held strong against the US for over 90 minutes of play, and they certainly have the talent to do the same against Spain. Germany has beaten Spain in their recent meetings, 2-0 in the 2022 EURO and 1-0 int he 2019 World Cup, but these teams are different now.
Spain’s offense is dangerous, and I slightly side with them in this contest. Even with a solid back line, Germany clearly gives up chances against solid offenses. In two matches, Germany allowed the US 18 shots on target and 32 total attempts. Spain has been taking 30+ attempts per game, so they should have no problem peppering the net. While I think Germany’s defense can hold for quite some time, I don’t think they can do so for a full 90 minutes. Spain is -225 to win this match in some way, and -110 to do so in 90 minutes. I trust their offense, and will be backing the offense to make some noise.

I think we see some fireworks in this match, and I think more than likely it comes from the Spanish sideline. They have absolutely nothing to lose, and should be playing aggressive offense. Their attack is stacked, and the amount of chances they have been creating is unmatched. Spain has produced 14+ corner kicks in their L4 matches, have a minimum of 7 shots on target in each match, and average 28.25 total attempts in their last 4 contests. Those numbers simply add up to balls in the back of the net, and with the way Germany has conceded to great offenses, Spain should have no trouble.
For this juice, I have no problem backing Spain to score twice in this match. Ultimately I think they win the Bronze Medal in 90 minutes by a score of 3-0 (+1500).
