The 2023 National Women’s Soccer League season is off to a hot start. After having last week off for international break, the league is set to kick off its third weekend of matches tonight at Providence Park in Portland, Oregon.
The league expanded to 12 teams last season with the hopes of more expansion teams on the horizon. Two Southern California clubs joined in 2022 as Angel City FC of Los Angeles, and San Diego Wave FC started their NWSL campaigns.
Last year’s champions, the Portland Thorns, were crowed in late October against the Kansas City Current at Audi Field in Washington D.C. League MVP Sophia Smith netted a goal in the 4th minute, leading the Thorns to a 2-0 championship victory.
Let’s get into some of the Best NWSL Bets for this weekend!

Portland Thorns vs. Houston Dash
Matchup Information
- Venue & Location: Providence Park (Portland, OR)
- Kick Off: Friday, April 14th @ 10:30PM Eastern

Moneyline
- Portland Thorns (-185)
- Draw (+320)
- Houston Dash (+490)
Total
- Over 2.5 (-110)
- Under 2.5 (-110)
Draw No Bet
- Portland Thorns (-550)
- Houston Dash (+490)
The Portland Thorns have shown no sign of a championship hangover. In two games, they have scored 4 goals in each and have only conceded one overall. They posted a 4-0 home shutout against Orlando, and then beat the Current 4-1 in KC during last season’s championship rematch.
Sophia Smith has contributed 4 goals and 1 assist in those games, thus starting her campaign for back to back league MVPs. The Portland backline is very sound, with USWNT veteran Becky Sauerbrunn leading the defense.
However, Houston does have some offensive fire power. After a nil-nil draw against Louisville to start the season, the Dash went to Chicago and beat the Red Stars 2-1. The Dash signed young forward Diana Ordóñez during the offseason to help the offensive production.
Last year, the rookie scored 11 goals in 19 games, notching 3 multiple goal games. She has already netted a PK this year, and will look to help the Dash compete against the defending champions.
I have locked in Portland Thorns/Houston Dash over 2.5 at -110 odds on BetOnline.
I think we see plenty of offense in this match, and I like Portland to continue their strong showing to start the season.
OL Reign vs. San Diego Wave FC

- OL Reign (-260)
- San Diego Wave (+200)
Now, if you tuned into my show on Wednesday on the Betting News Twitch account, you would’ve heard me talk about this game before lines dropped. On the show, I endorsed betting OL Reign Draw No Bet, again, prior to odds being available.
I do not endorse this anymore, as the lines are heavily juiced towards an OL Reign victory, and rightfully so.
The Reign have been incredible at home. Over the last two years, they are 17-7-6 in all competitions at home. Last year, they boasted an 8-5-2 record, only losing once during the regular season on their home field.
After losing 1-0 to start the season in Washington, the Reign beat Gotham FC 2-0 in New York. Now back at home, the Reign look to open their home campaign on the right foot in a West Coast showdown.
Newcomers San Diego Wave FC took the league by storm by making the playoffs in their first season, much thanks to the play of USWNT stud Alex Morgan. The Wave have scored 3 goals in each of their two victories, both of which have come at home at Snapdragon Stadium.
Now they take on a tough opponent in their first road test of the year. The Reign are backed by multiple USWNT players, including Alana Cook, Rose Lavelle, and Sofia Huerta.
I do not have a play in this game anymore, however if Alex Morgan does not start, and the other three start for the Reign, I would lean with the OL Reign on the ML.
Chicago Red Stars vs. Kansas City Current
Matchup Information
- Venue & Location: SeatGeek Stadium (Bridgeview, IL)
- Kick Off: Saturday, April 15th @ 8:00PM Eastern
- Broadcast: Paramount+
Betting Odds
Odds Courtesy of BetOnline.
Moneyline
- Chicago Red Stars (-105)
- Draw (+260)
- Kansas City Current (+260)
Total
- Over 2.5 (+106)
- Under 2.5 (-128)
Draw No Bet
- Chicago Red Stars (-220)
- Kansas City Current (+170)
Both of these teams are searching for their first win of the season after losing their opening two games. The Current have been riddled with injuries following their run all the way to the championship last year in just their second season in the league. However the injury bug has struck the Red Stars as well.
Chicago stud Mallory Swanson, formerly Pugh, went down with a torn patella tendon in the USWNT match against Ireland last week. She had a successful surgery and we wish her a quick recovery.
Her injury definitely hurts the Red Stars attack, who will now rely on Yuki Nagasato to step up her game. It will be interesting to see how these teams fair with some of their key players being sidelined.
I lean with the Kansas City Current on the Draw No Bet line at +170. If I play this, it will be a small sprinkle.
Brazilian stud Debinha returned to the pitch last match, and Vanessa DiBernardo, who played in Chicago last year, are likely to be in the lineup for the Current on Saturday. I like them to bounce back and start to turn this season around.
