Sunday brings us the Manchester Derby across the pond in the morning, as Manchester United hosts Manchester City in some English Premier League action. This is actually the third edition of the Derby this season, as the teams met earlier in the EPL and in the FA Community Shield as well.
Back in August, the two squads faced off in Wembley Stadium for the Community Shield. Two goals, one from each team, in the last 10 minutes of the match sent us to extra time, before eventually City won in PKs. However, United was able to get their revenge later during league play when they beat City at the Etihad, 2-1. In that match, the hosts scored in the 36th minute, holding that lead until Manchester United equalized in the 88th on a penalty kick, and found a winner in the 90th.

Derby Days at Old Trafford

Alejandro Garnacho and United host City in the Manchester Derby
For starters, we need to talk injuries, because one team is not at all banged up like the other. Manchester United essentially has access to their best 11 players, Manchester City does not.
They are missing defenders Nathan Aké and John Stones, midfielder and Ballon D’or Winner, Rodri, along with forward Erling Haaland. The offense has been fine, netting two goals in three straight matches, but City has had trouble on the road this season, especially scoring. Last time on the road, they beat AFC Bournemouth 2-1, but prior to that, they lost to Nottingham Forest 1-nil, to Real Madrid 3-1, and 5-1 to Arsenal. In this rivalry matchup, I’m sure the home team will make sure their defense is ready for any sort of attack, even if that attack might be depleted.
As for United, they have nothing to lose but everything to gain. They are coming off a 1-nil road loss to Forest, but beat Leicester 3-nil and Real Sociedad 4-1 before that. In fact, prior to that loss, United was unbeaten in seven straight matches across all competitions. I think the hosts can turn things back around and take down their rival.

Give me United at Old Trafford to take down City, or they can draw. Either way, we still win. Manchester United have a Europa League match this week, but it isn’t until Thursday. Their focus will be fine for this rivalry match, as they always have City circled on the calendar.
You know me, I am totally fine with paying the juiceman. And for this price, I will absolutely back the home team, who is less injured, and ultimately in better form over the past month. Manchester City has been up and down all year. Their only shot at some hardware this year is in the FA Cup, which isn’t for a few more weeks. I see the United backline playing very conservative in this match, limiting City’s already limited attack.
A home underdog with nothing to lose in a rivalry match is very dangerous, and I think Manchester United has just enough spunk to pull this thing off, but even if they can hold on for a draw, we walk away with a winner.
