The CONMEBOL Copa América 2024 begins play this week across 14 host cities in the United States. This is the most prestigious soccer tournament in the Western Hemisphere, as teams from both North and South America compete to see who the ultimate Champion is. Back in 2021, Brazil hosted the Copa América 2021 and lost in the final match against defending Champion, Argentina. Lionel Messi and company went on to win the 2022 World Cup as well, and now they are competing to add to their hardware and defend their Copa América Title.
This page will serve as a guide for everything you need to know about this year’s Copa America, including:
- Tournament Layout
- Group Previews
- Betting Odds
- And Much More!
Let’s get right into it!
CONMEBOL Copa America 2024 Betting Guide
Copa America 2024 Tournament Layout
The Copa America 2024 features 16 teams this year, spit into four groups of four teams. Each team plays the other 3 in their group for a single, 90 minute match regardless of the result. Teams are awarded 3 points for a win, 1 for a tie, and 0 for a loss. After all 3 matches of group stage, the Top 2 teams in each group based on points advance to the Quarterfinals.
Once we have 8 spots filled in the Quarterfinals, we see standard bracket play in single elimination matches. During the knockout round, if things are tied after 90 minutes, teams will play two 15 minute extra time periods, with a penalty shootout following if necessary. Bracket play continues until we have just one team standing. There will be a 3rd place match in this tournament for the losing semifinalists.
Argentina and Uruguay are tied with 15 Copa America Titles a piece, but Uruguay has not been to the final since they lifted the trophy in 2011. Brazil is the other dominant team in this tournament, with 9 Titles themselves. Paraguay, Chile and Peru all have 2 Copa America Titles, Bolivia and Colombia both have one, and Mexico has 2 finishes as the Copa America Runner Up.
Copa America 2024 Group Preview
We have standard Group Stage play and some interesting draws. Teams must finish in the Top 2 of their Group to advance, so games will be very tight. The initial factor is total points, but if teams are still even, here is the order of the tiebreakers.
Group Tiebreakers
- Total Points
- Goal Differential
- Goals Scored
Those should separate each teams, but each can then be applied to the individual games amongst the tied teams if necessary. Anyways, let’s take a look at these Groups where teams will fight for their spot in the knockout round!
World Rank in parentheses.
Group A
- Argentina (1)
- Peru (32)
- Chile (42)
- Canada (49)
This group is EASILY Argentina’s to lose. Despite their higher world ranking, Peru has got the short end of the stick from the oddsmakers as an outright winner. However, 2nd place in this group is certainly up for grabs. Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David lead a motivated Canadien team who are looking to surprise some people in this Copa America tournament.
Group B
- Mexico (14)
- Ecuador (31)
- Venezuela (54)
- Jamaica (55)
Another group that is the favorite’s to lose. Mexico has done the best job of representing North America in this tournament with 2 Title Match appearances, but this year oddsmakers think the USA has a better chance of winning the whole thing. Regardless, if Mexico buckles down and wins this group, they have should have an easier match in the Quarterfinals with a potential Semifinal date with Messi and Argentina.
Much like Group A, the favorite should dominate and roll through Group Stage, but 2nd place is certainly up in the air.
Group C
- United States (11)
- Uruguay (15)
- Panama (45)
- Bolivia (85)
Group C is looking to be a very exciting two horse race between the United States hosts and a hungry Uruguay squad. Schedule makers knew what they were doing as the final group match is between the United States and Uruguay, with likely a win to decide the group winner. Panama has won their last 2 World Cup Qualifiers and has a bit of momentum going into the Copa America, and could potentially play spoiler, although they have the worst odds to do so according to Vegas.
Group D
- Brazil (5)
- Colombia (12)
- Costa Rica (52)
- Paraguay (56)
Our last group features the 2021 Copa America Runner Ups paired with another Top 15 World foe. Colombia is the 4th overall betting favorite to win this entire tournament, and in this likely two horse race similar to Group C, we are blessed with Brazil vs Colombia to close out the Group. Costa Rica is coming off 2 World Cup Qualifying wins, while Paraguay has scored 1 goal in their L4 International Friendlies.
Copa America 2024 Betting Odds
Copa America 2024 Outright Winner
- Argentina (+180)
- Brazil (+225)
- Uruguay (+550)
- Colombia (+1000)
- USA (+1200)
- Ecuador (+1600)
- Mexico (+2000)
- Chile (+4000)
- Canada (+6500)
- Venezuela (+8000)
There we have the Top 10 Betting Favorites to win the Copa America 2024. This is just a 16 team tournament, so I am certain it stays within the Top 10, and probably more likely in the Top 7 (Sorry, Canadiens). Nevertheless, here are the bottom 6 teams in terms of betting favorites.
- Peru 100-1
- Paraguay 125-1
- Costa Rica 200-1
- Jamaica 200-1
- Bolivia 250-1
- Panama 350-1
Like I said, it more than likely stays within the Top 10 on the odds board. What’s important to me with this smaller tournament is looking at potential knockout round matchups. Assuming Mexico and Argentina handle business in their groups, they will most likely face a team outside of the World Top 30 in the Quarterfinals. For this reason, Mexico to reach the Semifinal at (+160) is not a terrible bet in my mind. All you need is for them to handle business against team much more inferior squads.
Now, with that same thinking on the other side of the bracket, it’s a bit tougher. Assuming the US, Uruguay, Brazil and Colombia all finish in the Top 2, we could have some very exciting Quarter and Semifinal matches. If everything goes to betting chalk, we would see Uruguay vs Colombia and Brazil vs the United States in the Quarterfinals. Now instead of 2 Top 10 teams and 2 outside the Top 30, we have all 4 teams with the World Ranks of 5-15. A bit tougher to predict a semifinalist before the beginning of the tournament.
Copa America 2024 Best Bets
Ultimately, I would not bet on Brazil. They are very young and although Vini is a UCL Champion, he has a lot on his shoulders without Neymar and Richarlson. Rodrygo will be able to help him, however Brazil has been to two straight Copa America Finals. Anything less would be a disappointing tournament.
If I were to bet any futures, I obviously think Argentina has the easiest path and most talented team, but that is a small number for an International Tournament Future. Uruguay at +550 is enticing, but I would want to see whom they match up against in the Quarterfinals. As much of a homer pick as this is, if there was a year to bet on the United States, this would be it in my opinion.
They are playing great soccer, they are almost cracking the World Top 10, and I think they could pull off the upset against Brazil or Colombia in the Quarterfinals. Uruguay will be a tough group matchup, but I think this could be a sneak team as they host the 2024 Copa America tournament.
