William Hill, the UK-based Caesar-owned sportsbook just made an announcement that it is starting operations and offering its services in Washington DC. it is worthy to note that it is not a full launch as the mobile sports betting app is only available in a small geographic area around the sportsbook at Capital One Arena, however, it is positive news and a step in the right direction towards US operation and expansion.
Those within two blocks of the arena can utilize the sportsbooks’ mobile app. It is not the ideal mobile sports betting app but it has its advantages, the most prominent being that queues and crowd can be avoided at the Capital One arena as everyone does not have to be in the arena before they can wager on sports. The reason why it is so is because of the type of license the sportsbook has. It is a Class A license that restricts operations to facilities that are located in the city’s four main sports stadiums and arenas. This restriction will ensure that bets are not taken within federal buildings.
The competition between William Hill and Gambet DC has become even stiffer, although William Hill seems to be winning. In November $13.7 million bets were made with William Hill, which was five times higher than the $3.9 million GambetDC generated for the same period. GambetDC is also restricted, the same way William Hill is. With the launch of the mobile app, William Hill will surely do a lot better than GambetDC. It is expected that a full-service option in early 2021 will be available. As of now, several bet types are available, including in-play wagering and parlay cards.
William Hill has a partnership agreement with all teams that use the Capital One Arena, including the Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, and Washington Mystics. The rivalry is more in favor of William Hill and they will capture the largest part of the sports betting market in Washington DC with the launch of their app.
