See Picks & Statistics For The GameLet’s talk some puck! Usually I am diving into some NFL or College Sports, but with the pigskin season coming to a close, it’s time for me to get back on the ice! Tonight we have a big battle in Boston as the Bruins host the Winnipeg Jets for some stick and puck action.
The Jets currently sit on top of the Central Division, the Western Conference, and are tied with the Capitals with 73 total points so far this season. Winnipeg is also on a four game winning streak, are 7-2-1 in their L10 games, and they are 15-9-0 on the road this year. Can they keep this up against a hungry Boston team looking to bounce back?
The Bruins are 4th in the Atlantic Division currently, and are sitting in the first Wild Card spot for the Eastern Conference, just one point ahead of the Lightning and Blue Jackets who are right on their tail. Boston is 16-7-3 on their home ice, and they are looking for revenge as the Jets beat them 8-1 in Winnipeg earlier this season.

Bruins Desperately Need a Win at Home Tonight
Winnipeg’s eight goal domination of the Bruins at home was over a month and half ago on December 10th. There’s been plenty of time for the Bruins to regroup since then. In that game, Bruins’ goalie Jeremy Swayman played arguably his worst game of the season, allowing 8 goals on just 35 attempts, saving a horrendous 77.1% of shots faced. You’ve got to think that this is an outlier, as Swayman typically only allows 3.03 goals per game and saves closer to 89.5% of his opponent’s shots. His numbers improve to 2.36 goals allowed and .914 save percentage at home, and the Bruins will certainly need him to play phenomenal in order to win this game.
Problems With Penalties?
One stat that really sticks out to me comes when looking at penalties. The Bruins lead the NHL in penalty minutes, totaling 564 so far this season, with the 2nd most penalized team only having 528. This averages out to over 10.8 penalty minutes per game, or roughly 5 power play opportunities to their foes. The Winnipeg Jets lead the league in power play percentage, scoring on over 32% of man-up chances. The next best team converts on just 28% of PP chances.
I wouldn’t be hyper-focusing on this stat if Boston was decent at killing the penalty, but they aren’t! The Bruins are Bottom 7 in the NHL in PK%, successfully killing just 75% of penalties that they were called for. When you are the most penalized team in the NHL, playing the team who takes advantage of those penalties with the most success, you better be good at killing them. That simply isn’t the case with the Bruins, and even on their home ice, I see the Jets taking advantage of some power play opportunities. Plus, the Bruins tallied 37 penalty minutes against the Jets last time out.
While this may be an outlier, the Jets converted 3/6 PPs in that contest, and I see them doing the same tonight.
Winnipeg Jets vs Boston Bruins Best Bets
Jets vs Bruins Prediction: Jets Win 4-2
Best Bets: Jets ML (-137) BetOnline
BetOnline is currently giving us (-137) for Winnipeg to keep their winning streak alive, and that is enough for me considering the rest of the market is priced at (-145) and moving. This juice is fine with me, but I have no problem with betting the Jets in Regulation (famous last words), but I’ll do what I do best and Pay the Juiceman.
Ultimately I think the Jets are the better hockey team at the moment, and I like them to keep their momentum going. They are on track to win the President’s Trophy and with both teams turning around from playing Tuesday and playing again Saturday, I don’t think anyone will be looking ahead. Along with the Jets, I also have a long shot, 2-1 player prop for this matchup as well.
Bonus Bets: Kyle Connor Over 0.5 PP Point (+200) Bovada
Alright, buckle up, and hear me out.
Kyle Connor had 3 points against the Bruins last time out. None of them came on the power play, but as mentioned, the Jets had plenty of success. Tonight I expect multiple PP opportunities for Winnipeg, and I see their stud taking advantage.
Connor leads this team in nearly every category. He has 65 points (2nd has 57), he is tied with Mark Scheifele with 29 goals this season, and also has 36 assists, only trailing D Josh Morrissey. Now, Kyle Connor also has 45 more shots that the next closest opponent. This guy does it all for the Jets and is involved as often as he can be.
He has 23 PP points already this season and had two power play assists a couple games ago. Connor is listed for a regular point on most books priced between -230 up to -280. If he is that juicy for a single point, I think 2-1 odds that he does so on a power play attempt is certainly worth the bet.
