Two of our more recent Stanley Cup Champions go head to head in Ball Arena tonight as the Colorado Avalanche host the Vegas Golden Knights. Both of these teams have already clinched a playoff berth with roughly five games left in the season, but there could still be some movement as far as seeding goes. Therefore, both squads should bring their A-game to the ice tonight.
The Avalanche sit in 3rd place in the Central, seven points behind the Stars while also five points ahead of the Blues. While it is unlikely that they move up to the 2nd spot, they’ll need to be sure to put some space between them and St. Louis if possible. As for the Golden Knights, they are on top of the Pacific by five points with the same amount of games remaining. The Kings are trying to catch VGK, but as long as they handle business, they’ll take the division.
But who will skate away with a victory in this matchup?

These teams already faced off twice this season, splitting the series 1-1 with both home teams winning. However, one was much more dominant that the other. Back in October, the Golden Knights beat Colorado in Vegas by a score of 8-4. The next month, the Avs got their revenge but did so in a shootout fashion after playing to a 1-1 tie after 60 minutes and overtime.
VGK has been seriously outshot in both performances, and with Colorado back at home after a road loss, I lean with the hosts.

In two games against Vegas, Colorado has put up 30+ shots on goal in each, while only allowing 40 total to the Golden Knights. Goaltending has been the issue for the Avalanche against this team, and it’s clear that the tenders are what’s kept VGK in both games.
Colorado has outshot VGK 66-40 so far this season, yet the Golden Knights are leading 9-5 on the aggregate score. That is not sustainable if you are the visitors, and I see Colorado coming with major vengeance at home in the season series finale. It’s also worth mentioning these teams have not seen each other since Thanksgiving, so things may have changed.
However, we have Colorado who is back at home where they are 25-11-3 all year long. While the Knights have been stellar on the road, specifically 20-13-5, and are on a two game road winning streak, my gut tells me that the home team comes to play tonight and wins this one for their fans.
