See Picks & Statistics For The GameWednesday, Jan. 18’s NHL schedule includes the Dallas Stars making a trip to the SAP Center to take on the San Jose Sharks at 10 p.m. ET. This is the third and final meeting of the 2022-23 campaign between Dallas and San Jose after already having split the first two matchups, making it interesting to see who wins the Stars vs Sharks season series.
After losing back-to-back games, the Stars jumped back into the win column with a 4-0 win over the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday. Four different Dallas players found the back of the net and Ty Dellandrea had a pair of assists while Jake Oettinger turned away all 27 shots he faced for his third shutout of the season.
The Sharks have struggled throughout the campaign, winning only three times since Dec. 17. They enter tonight’s action having lost three straight games, most recently falling 4-3 to the New Jersey Devils in a shootout two nights ago.
As with most NHL matchups, there are plenty of betting opportunities in this Stars vs Sharks tilt. Here’s a look at BetOnline Sportsbook’s latest odds for the games, as well as a prediction and the best bet to make, courtesy of Betting News.

Stars vs Sharks Prediction and Picks
Stars vs Sharks Prediction: Stars 5, Sharks 2
Stars vs Sharks: Stars ML (Best Value: -162 at BetOnline) & Over 6 Goals (Best Value: -114 at BetOnline)
Traveling to enemy territory can make it tougher to win for road teams. However, that hasn’t been the case for clubs visiting the SAP Center this season.
The Sharks have been horrendous in their own barn, winning just four of their previous 23 home games. They haven’t won at home since Dec. 22 and now must face the Stars, who have been solid on the road, highlighted by their 14-7-4 away record.
San Jose’s home struggles stem from the club’s inability to keep the puck out of its own net. The Sharks have surrendered 92 goals in their 23 home games thus far, allowing at least four in six of the last seven contests at the SAP Center. In fact, the Sharks are 0-14 straight up when they allow at least four goals at home this season.
RotoWire has also confirmed that the Sharks are starting James Reimer in goal tonight, which is terrific news for the Stars. The veteran netminder is 1-5-1 in his last seven starts, tallying a 4.16 goals-against average (GAA) and .872 save percentage (SV%). He’s also allowed exactly four goals in each of his last two games against San Jose.
The Stars roll into tonight’s game with the NHL’s fourth-best power play (27.1%). They have five PP goals in their last seven games and have a great opportunity to keep the ball rolling. The Sharks’ penalty kill has allowed eight PP goals on 30 opportunities over their last 11 home games.
There just really aren’t many good reasons to believe that the Sharks can pull off the upset tonight. After all, they are 8-26-5 as the underdog this season, whereas the Stars are 20-10-3 as the favorite.
The Stars also own the seventh-best offense in the league. The Sharks aren't good enough to keep pace with that. Heck, they aren’t even good enough to slow Dallas down, as proven by San Jose surrendering 14 regulation goals over their last three games alone.
Though I’m confident that the Stars can beat the Sharks by multiple goals, I’m still sticking with the moneyline as the safest bet. San Jose is 13-5 straight up in the last 18 Stars vs Sharks games at SAP Center, so there is a (small) chance that the home team makes things interesting.
With all the goals that the Sharks have been allowing, I also recommend backing the over on the 6.5-goal total. Dallas and San Jose have hit the over in 14 of their last 20 meetings, going over 6.5 goals in three of their last four meetings — including both of the previous games this season.
