2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs Second-Round Matchups – Eastern Conference
1 Carolina Hurricanes vs 2 New York Rangers
The Carolina Hurricanes and New York Rangers are set to do battle in the second round. The teams met 4 times during the regular season, with Carolina taking 3 of 4.
Both teams are coming off of a long 7 game series in which both survived upset-minded teams. They will have a quick turnaround for their second round series that starts on Wednesday, May 18.
The Hurricanes still hold home ice advantage in this series and will start it off at home, where they ended their last one. Carolina is heavily favored in the series, but they will have to be careful. They let the Boston Bruins force 7 games on them in Round 1. They will have to avoid that mistake again in order to be successful.
1 Florida Panthers vs 3 Tampa Bay Lightning
Two of the top goaltenders in the league will meet in Round 2 when the Panthers and Lightning get together. They met 4 times in the regular season, with the teams splitting the season set.
The Lightning survived in Game 7 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Andrei Vasilevskiy was phenomenal, stopping 30 of 31 to get Tampa into Round 2. Their quest for a third straight title will continue.
The Panthers only needed six games to defeat Washington in Round 1. They rattled off 3 straight wins and enter this series on a hot streak. Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, had the best record among all goalies in the league this season. His play in the second round will be key for Florida to knock off the defending champs.
2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs Second-Round Matchups – Western Conference
1 Colorado Avalanche vs 3 St. Louis Blues
The Colorado Avalanche get ready for the St. Louis Blues with plenty of rest. They were the only team to sweep a series in Round 1, and they have not played since Monday, May 9.
The Blues needed six games to deal with the Minnesota Wild. They are upset-minded, but like so many others, they have struggled against Colorado. They handed the Avs a loss back on October 16, but lost the other two meetings the teams had.
As expected, Colorado is a very heavy favorite to move on. They already exploited one Central Division rival in the first round. They are ready to try and make that happen again.
1 Calgary Flames vs 2 Edmonton Oilers
The Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers have not met in the playoffs since 1991. That 30 year drought will come to an end on Wednesday, May 18.
The teams split their 4 game season series. The top two teams in the Pacific Division are set for at least 4 more games filled with defense and great goaltending. Both goalies were able to record shutouts in Round 1, and the defense was a big help in that.
The Flames enter the series as slight favorites with home ice advantage. After both teams were involved with a Game 7 in Round 1, they will have to adjust quickly. On the plus side, neither team will have to leave Alberta and travel will be limited.
