See Picks & Statistics For The GameToday’s Penguins vs Flyers prediction is brought to you by Bovada. Bovada is a market leader in sports betting, offering a variety of options from the NHL to the UFC and everything in between.
It’s a relatively quiet night around the National Hockey League with just four games scheduled for Monday, Jan. 8. Having said that, one of tonight’s games is a big one as the Pittsburgh Penguins (19-15-4) and Philadelphia Flyers (20-13-6) continue their rivalry with a clash at Wells Fargo Center at 7 p.m. ET.
The Penguins aim to rediscover their offense after falling 3-1 to the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday. On the flip side, a 3-2 win over the Calgary Flames this weekend snapped a four-game slide for the Flyers, leaving time to tell if more success is in store tonight.
These rivals have a long way to go to win the Metropolitan Division this season. After all, Pittsburgh sits at +1800 odds to win the division (T-4th) Philadelphia is slightly further back at +3300 (6th), per Bovada’s futures betting markets.
Focusing on the preset, tonight’s showdown is filled with betting opportunities, too, so let’s dive into my Penguins vs Flyers prediction and best bets.

Penguins vs Flyers Prediction & Pick (1/8)
Tonight’s game is the third Penguins-Flyers collision of the 2023-24 NHL season. The Metropolitan rivals clashed in a home-and-home series back at the start of December, resulting in two victories for the Flyers as they won 4-3 and 2-1 in a shootout and overtime, respectively.
But despite those two losses, Pittsburgh is still 7-3 SU in its last 10 meetings with Philadelphia. The Penguins also head into tonight’s matchup with some momentum stemming from a 7-3 SU record in their last 10 games. It’s been a group effort, though, as Sidney Crosby, Jake Guentzel, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, and Ricard Rakell each have nine or more points during that span.
The Flyers, meanwhile, have lost five of their last seven outings, meaning momentum isn’t exactly on their side. The team could use more offense from the likes of Joel Farabee, Scott Laughton, and Cam Atkinson, who’ve only combined for two goals during that span.
The Flyers need more offense from the likes of Cam Atkinson, who’s currently on a 23-game goal drought.
It’s also going to be more of an uphill battle for Philadelphia if it can’t get its NHL-worst power play going against Pittsburgh’s No. 8-ranked penalty kill. While the Penguins’ PP unit is clicking at an abysmal 14.6% (26th) this season, they have scored on seven of their last 38 opportunities (18.4%).
The Flyers’ penalty kill has been reliable for the most part this season (86.3%, No. 2), but the unit is only operating at 77.4% in the last 10 matchups against the Penguins.
Still, it’s worth noting that tonight presents a decent opportunity for John Tortorella’s team to reverse its fortunes. After all, the Flyers are 6-3 SU in their last nine times hosting the Penguins, picking up five of those victories by a multi-goal margin.
Additionally, Philadelphia has the fifth-best winning percentage as underdogs (59.7%) this season.
Will the Penguins grab a rare win at Wells Fargo Center tonight?
Even though the Flyers have opened this season series with back-to-back wins, I see the Penguins emerging victorious tonight. Philadelphia is in the middle of a rut and I need to see more than just one win to convince that it’s over. With the Flyers struggling on special teams and to score lately, I see a surging Penguins club jumping on the opportunity to finally beat their divisional rival.
With that in mind, don’t be shocked if a ton of goals aren’t scored. The Under is 5-1 in the last six Pittsburgh-Philadelphia matchups, averaging 5.2 goals along the way. The Under is also 10-9 in the Penguins’ road games this season, as well as 6-3 in the Flyers’ last nine at home.
Throw in the fact that neither team has a strong power play and it’s easier to see this game finishing with fewer than 6.5 goals.

Best Penguins vs Flyers NHL Player Prop (1/8)
One Penguins vs. Flyers player prop that I just can’t ignore is the Over Jake Guentzel’s 3.5-shot total.
Guentzel has thrived at generating scoring opportunities lately, averaging 5.4 shots on goal in his last five games. He hit the Over on this prop in each of those contests, including when he registered nine SOG — his second-highest total of the season — against the St. Louis Blues on Dec. 30.
Considering how the Flyers are allowing an average of 38.8 SOG in their last four games, it’s safe to say that Guentzel is in a prime spot to hit the Over again.
