It’s the most wonderful time of the year and we’re about a week out from the big dance. Tonight, the Minnesota Wild will head to Long Island to take on the New York Islanders. These 2 teams last met back in February and the Wild won 6-3.
New York is 32-32-10 this season and 6th in the Metro Division. They’re currently on a 6-game losing streak and desperately need a win to stay in playoff contention as they’re now 5 points out of the 2nd Wild Card spot in the East. The team is 3-4-3 in their last 10 games and 17-15-5 at home this season.
The Islanders offense has been all over this year, mainly no consistency. They rank 25th in goals scored but 7th in shots on goal per game. New York shoots like crap though, ranking 3rd worst in shooting percentage and for another year in a row, they are the worst team in the league for power play conversion.
On the other end of the ice, they struggle as well. The Islanders are 19th in goals and 21st in shots on goal per game. They play smart hockey and are 2nd best in the league for penalties per game, but their penalty kill is 3rd worst in the league.
Goaltender Ilya Sorokin is expected to get the start. He has a 27-23-6 record with a 2.79 GAA and a .904 save percentage. Sorokin is 0-4-1 in this last 5 starts vs the Wild with a 3.21 GAA and a .901 save percentage.

The Wild are 41-28-7 this year and are 4th in the Central Division. They come into this game on a 3-game losing streak and are 4-4-2 in their last 10 games. Minnesota is great on the road with a 22-11-5 record and is currently tied for the 1st Wild Card spot in the West.
Minnesota has been without Kirill Kaprisov and Joel Eriksson Ek for an extended period of time. Still, this team is competing and currently in a playoff spot with the chance of getting these guys back. They could use it as they rank 27th in goals allowed and 25th in shots on goal per game.
It’s a little rough on defense for them. Minnesota ranks 12th in goals allowed and 27th in shots on goal allowed per game. This team’s low point is their penalty kill that ranks 2nd worst in the league.
In net, goalie Filip Gustavsson is expected to get the start. He’s 29-17-6 this year with a 2.54 GAA and a .916 save percentage. Gustavsson has been having a really good year and has 5 shutouts to go along with it. Let’s check out the odds and get into the picks.

This should be a hard-fought game. We have 2 teams who have everything to play for, especially the Islanders, so we need to see smart hockey. Smart hockey can sometimes equal slow paced and low scoring hockey, which is the way we’re going.
On top of that, we have 2 goaltenders who can really play. Like I said before, Gustavsson is really having himself a year and Sorokin can be dangerous when given the proper help. The Islanders will have been off since Tuesday and the Wild since Wednesday, so we should see sharp skills.
I like for Gustavsson to get over his saves line, that should be around 27 saves. The Islanders should put at least 30 shots on goal tonight, if not more. I think the Islanders finally get back on track and will pepper him.
For a player prop, I like Jaren Spurgeon to record 2 or more shots on goal for -110. He has hit this mark in his last 2 games and his last 7 out of 8 games. Spurgeon has also recorded the mark in his last 3 road games.
