The Colorado Avalanche (6-2-0) will host the St. Louis Blues (3-3-1) Wednesday night. Colorado is sitting at the top of the Central while the Blues are 7th. Both teams are coming loses and will be looking to bounce back.
Colorado is on a 2-game skid including a 4-0 loss to the Sabres. They have won both their home games this year so far and will be looking to get another one in front of the home crowd.
The Avs are just a stacked team and only 1 year removed from being Stanley Cup Champions. Colorado had a few roster changes. JT Compher exited the team while Tomas Tatar, Ross Colton and Jonathan Drouin joined the team.
Nathan Mackinnon, Mikko Rantanen and Cale Makar still lead this monster of a team. Valeri Nichushkin and Artturi Lehkonen return with their offensive power. This team is still in Cup contending form.
Colorado has been playing that heavy offense, averaging 3.38 goals per game and averaging 34.6 shots on goals per game. They’re peppering the net already, so I could see their goals per game average go up.
St. Louis has had an ok start to the season splitting their games so far. They need to start putting the puck in the net – they ranked 2nd to last with averaging 1.86 goals per game.
How do you score goals? You have to shoot the puck and they also rank 2nd to last in the league in shots on goal per game with 24.7. Doesn’t help that they also have no power play, ranking…what? You guessed it, dead last.
Despite their offensive struggles, they’ve still found ways to win. Their goal tending has been solid only allowing 2.71 goals per game which ranks 9th in the league. They spend the least amount of time in the penalty box as they average only 7.9 minutes per game, the best in the league.
The Avalanche have an even better defense though, so the Blues will need to rely on their defense and goal tending to slow down the Colorado offense. If they can contain their offense, find the back of the net and maybe a little luck in their – could they pull out a win?
Let’s get into the odds and best plays for the game!

St. Louis Blues vs Colorado Avalanche Prediction and Picks
Prediction and Pick: Colorado Avalanche -1.5 (+106)
Coming in on this losing streak is a perfect time to turn it around for Colorado. They’ve played well at home, and I don’t think this game will be any different.
They should come out fast and hot on offense to take an early lead. The shots will be firing from Rantanen, Mackinnon and company right from the get-go.
Binnington is expected to be in net for the Blues and that doesn’t have the best track record. Binnington is 0-2-1 in his last 3 games from last year vs Colorado, allowing 4, 3 and 3 goals in each of the 3 games.
I like the Avs to cover the puck line and win by multiple goals. St. Louis doesn’t have an answer for this offense, and this should be their toughest task so far this season. We’re getting value on the line which I think will move to even money or more by game time.
Player Prop: Mikko Rantanen O3.5 Shots on Goal (-138)
The boys are going to be shooting and shooters shoot, right? Mikko has been doing just that. He has hit this line in his last 2 out of 3 games with 5 in each of those games.
I really expect the Avs to pour it on tomorrow and he will be right in the mix of that. Being one of their powerhouses on offense, he will find he spots.
The Blues commit the least amount of penalty minutes per game, so Colorado’s going to need to get St Louis caught up for some power plays. The power play is a huge spot for Rantanen to get his shots.
This should be a good game for the Avs to bounce back and have a big game. Look for that to happen and Rantanen will get his shots along with that win.
