It’s the most wonderful time of the year, where every game counts. Tonight, the Ottawa Senators will take on the Detroit Red Wings at the Little Caesars Arena. These 2 division rivals last played 2 weeks ago, and the Sens won 2-1. Let’s get some background and then we’ll get into the Senators vs Red Wings picks.
Detroit is 33-32-6 this season and are 6th in the Atlantic Division. They come into this game off a loss to the Avalanche on Tuesday night. The Wings are 3-7-0 in their last 10 games, 18-15-3 at home and 8-10-1 in divisional matchups. This game is big for both teams as Ottawa is currently in the 1st Wild Card spot and Detroit is 2 games out of the 2nd Wild Card spot.
Their offense isn’t the greatest. They rank 21st on goals scored and 23rd in shots on goal per game. Detroit does have a good power play, ranking 3rd best in the league. Guys like Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond are really going to have to step up.
On defense, it’s kind of more of the same. They rank 22nd in goals allowed and 18th in shots on goal per game. Unlike on offensive special teams, Detroit has the worst penalty kill in the league. That’s the kind of stuff that can kill you, especially when you’re committing over 3 penalties a game.
Goaltender Alex Lyon is expected to get the start. He’s 12-9-1 this season with a 2.76 GAA and a .897 save percentage. Lyon did not get the start in the last game, so he will be new to the Senators.
Ottawa will keep fighting to hold on to the 1st Wild Card spot

Red Wings goaltender Alex Lyon makes a save on Ottawa Senators right winger Drake Batherson.
Ottawa is 37-28-5 this year and 4th in the Atlantic Division. They currently hold the 1st Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Sens come into this game off a loss to the Sabres Tuesday night. Currently, they are 7-3-0 in their last 10 games, 17-18-3 on the road and 10-10-1 in divisional matchups.
Brady Tkachuk continues to lead this offense with guys like Tim Stutzle and Drake Batherson. Their offense is 20th in goals scored and 7th in shots on goal per game. Although they shoot a lot, the Sens rank 25th in shooting percentage. For offensive special teams, they rank 12th on power play conversion.
Now on defense, they are middle of the road, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. They rank 13th in goals allowed and 16th for shots on goal allowed per game. Ottawa is allowing over 4 penalties per game and rank 19th in penalty kill.
In net, we’re expected to see Linus Ullmark. He is 19-13-3 this season with a 2.78 GAA and a .908 save percentage. Ullmark had 48 saves and allowed only 1 goal in the last game vs the Wings and he’ll be looking to replicate that. Let’s check out the odds and get into the picks.

Both of these teams need this win badly. For the Sens, it widens the gap for them between the 1st Wild Card spot and the 2nd Wild Card spot. Then for the Wings, it brings them right behind the 2nd Wild Card spot. In a way, the Wings need this more because of how tight the race is for that 2nd spot.
Either way, I’m taking the Senators here. I think they’re the better team and the better team of this rivalry. This is the 4th time they are facing off and the Sens won 2 of the first 3 games.
I also think the Senators come out hungry in this game. Losing that last game had to sting a little as it really would’ve put them in a comfy spot. They’re going to get it back with Ullmark in net, but they have to play better defense than 2 weeks ago. It’s not sustainable for your goal to see over 40 shots per game.
For player props, give me Brady Tkachuk to have 3 or more shots on goal and to record a point. Putting these together will give you some plus money value. Brady has hit the 3 shots mark in his last 3 games and has had a point in his last 4 games vs Detroit.
