This game has big implications on one hand and then doesn’t on the other. We have the New Yorks Rangers taking on the New York Islanders at UBS Arena. Both teams have 79 points with 5 games remaining and are 8 points out of the 2nd Wild Card spot. Let’s get some background and get into the Rangers vs Islanders picks.
The Islanders are 34-32-11 this season and are 4th in the Metro Division. They come into this game off an overtime loss to the Predators on Tuesday night. New York is 3-4-3 in their last 10 games, are 19-15-5 at home and are 10-8-3 in divisional games.
Offense is usually a struggle for the Islanders and this year they just haven’t been consistent. They rank 25th in goals scored and 10th in shots on goal allowed. The Isles may finally be shooting but they rank 28th in shooting percentage.
Unfortunately, ever since they started to focus on offense, their defense has slipped. They rank 18th in goal allowed and 20th in shots on goal allowed per game. Special teams in the worst spot for the Islanders, offensive and defense. They are 2nd worst in the league on both the power play and penalty kill.
Goalie Marcus Hogberg has been confirmed for tonight. He is 2-4-2 this season with a 2.62 GAA and a .907 save percentage. It will be a big test tonight on home ice for Hogberg.
Rangers need to snap losing streak to keep playoff hopes alive

The Rangers are 36-35-7 this season and 6th in the Metro Division. They’re currently on a 3-game losing streak and are 3-6-1 in their last 10 games. This is not the right time of the year to get on a skid. New York is 18-16-4 on the road and 11-12-1 in divisional matchups.
This team has some shooters on it in Artemi Panarin and JT Miller. They rank 14th in goals scored and 11th in shots on goal per game. Ranking 16th in shooting percentage isn’t terrible either. The power play is their weak spot, raking 27th in the league.
They don’t play the greatest defense, which can hurt them tonight. They rank 20th in goals allowed and 26th in shots on goal allowed per game. Unlike their power play, the Rangers are 12th on the penalty kill. They need it as they commit over 4 penalties per game.
In net, we’re expected to see Igor Shesterkin. He is 25-28-5 this season with a 2.89 GAA and a .903 save percentage. Shesterkin is 4-1-0 in his last 5 games vs the Islanders, including a shutout last game. Let’s check out the odds and get into the picks.

I’m really not sure who wins this one. I’m of course leaning with the Islanders for 2 reasons – one is that the Rangers look terrible right now and the other is bias. The Isles also defended home ice nicely last game at home vs the Capitals.
With Hogberg in net, I’m not sure how that’s going to go. I do think the Rangers find the back of the net numerous times. The Islanders haven’t got more than 2 goals per game past Shesterkin in their last 4 outings. That’s where the problem is going to come in for the Islanders.
I like for Shesterkin to get over his saves line. It’s currently at 25.5 saves for -110 and he should easily see over 30 shots this game. He has shown he can handle this Islanders team without a problem. Shesterkin has recorded over 30+ saves in 3 of his last 4 games vs the Islanders.
With how inconsistent the players have been for both teams, it’s hard for me to land on a player I’m comfortable with. Both these teams need this game, so we should see a hard fought match.
