Tonight, we have a good old fashion dog fight on your hands. Both teams are looking to make the playoffs – one is in there and the other is fighting to get in.
The New York Islanders (30-26-15) will play the Florida Panthers (46-21-5) at the Amerant Bank Arena. These 2 teams met earlier this year and the Panthers won in overtime by a score of 3-2.
New York comes into this game off an embarrassing 4-0 loss to the Devils. They’re 3-6-1 in their last 10 games and have a road record of 14-16-5, so they struggle. Time is running out and the Isles are 6 points out of the 2nd Wild Card race.
The Islanders offense isn’t the most consistent. They rank towards the bottom of the league for goals scored and shots on goal forced per game. Some games they score 6 and some nights they score 1 – there’s no consistency.
Defense used to be the Islanders strong point, but they have slipped this year. They rank in the bottom of the league for shots on goal allowed per game and their penalty kill is terrible. They on kill 71.9% of the penalties they take.
Backup goalie Semyon Varlamov will be in net for the Islanders. He has a 8-7-4 record with a 2.86 GAA and a .910 save percentage. Expect Varlamov to get peppered by this high-powered Florida offense.
Florida will look to continue their winning ways into the playoffs
The Panthers are having a hell of a year. They have been battling for the 1st spot in the Atlantic Division Boston lost last night, so they have a chance to tie them.
Florida is a good home team, so that will be a big advantage this time of year. They have a record of 21-12-2 at home this year and are 4-5-1 in their last 10 games.
Although it’s just about certain the Panthers will be in the playoffs, the race is so tight that every game counts. They will be playing like every game is their last and that will cause headaches for the Islanders.
The Panthers are one of the best offenses in the league, ranking 2nd for shots on goal per game. They run a tight defense, ranking 1st in goals allowed and 3rd in shots on goal per game.
Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky has been playing out of his mind this season. He has a record of 32-16-3 with a 2.41 GAA and a .914 save percentage. Bob is putting up a Vezina worthy year again.
Let’s check out the odds and get into the picks.

Florida comes into this game off a loss and this is a perfect get right spot for them. They’re 7-3-0 in their last 10 games vs the Islanders and will look to add to that win column.
The Panthers are going to pepper the net with all the shots they put up per game. That leaky Islanders defense always leaves Sorokin exposed. A team like Florida will take advantage of all those exposed moments.
Varlamov doesn’t have the best record against the Panthers either. He’s 1-2-1 with a game where he was pulled. The overtime loss was the game back in January where he held his own, but now it’s do or die time. Every point matters.
I think we see a lot of goals out of the Panthers. They should cover the puck line even if it’s with an empty netter. The Islanders want the playoffs just as bad, but it’s going to take a lot for them to keep up.
