Happy Leap Day folks and we’re back with another one! We have the New York Islanders (24-20-14) taking on the Detroit Red Wings (33-20-6) tonight. The Red Wings are sitting in a Wild Card spot while the Islanders keep slipping.
New York is 7th in the Metro Division and currently 7 points out of the 2nd Wild Card position. They’ve struggled on the road this year with a 11-12-5 record.
The Islanders are coming in off a win vs Dallas but are 4-3-3 in their last 10 games. That 2nd 3 in their record stands out as the Islanders lead the league for Overtime losses.
If the Islanders could finish games, they could easily be sitting in a Wild Card spot, but I digress. Anyways, the Islanders have a completely different look this year. They play offense and no defense when for many years it was vice versa.
Mat Barzal, Bo Horvat and Noah Dobson lead this team offensively and have play fantastic. Barzal and Horvat have shown very strong chemistry. They just scored a pretty give a go game winner in overtime last game.
Goalie Ilya Sorokin is expected in net. He had a hot start to the season despite losses due to lack of defense. As time has gone on though, he has gotten leaky. He has a 18-13-11 record with a 3.11 GAA and a .909 save percentage.
Detroit comes into this game extremely hot. They’re on a 6-game heater and are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games. Sitting 4th in the Atlantic Division, the Red Wings are currently the 1st Wild Card seed.
This team has been firing on all cylinders. Patrick Kane in particular has been showing out during this streak. He has 4 goals and 6 assists in the 6 games and has had a point in 9 out of his last 10 games.
The Wings are good at home as well with a 18-8-5 record. Offensively they rank towards the top of the league for scoring and shooting percentage.
On defense, the Red Wings are not very good. They rank towards the bottom of the league for goals and shots on goal allowed per game. The Islanders offense will find ways to score against this defense too.
Let’s check out the odds and get into the picks!

These 2 teams faced off early this season and ended 4-3. I really think we see a similar game this time around because both teams do not play defense.
Sorokin played in that game and saw 34 shots. Villie Husso started for the Red Wings and saw 40 shots, so lots of offense. He has been injured and he is now day-to-day, so he could play.
We’ll have to keep an eye out for that. Alex Lyon is currently expected to start, who has been playing well. I would like to see Husso start, but I think the game goes over regardless of who starts.
I expect the Red Wings to come out fast and strike early. They just scored 8 goals in their last game. Sorokin has let in some soft goals as of late and that could be what gives them the early lead.
The Islanders offense has played well as of late, so I expect them to find the back on the net. We should see a high pace, high scoring matchup to cash this plus money ticket.
Nugget: We’ll be taking Ilya Sorokin Over Saves. It should open around 29.5 to 30.5.
