We head to the Metropolitan Division as two rivals face off for the 1st time this regular season. The New York Islanders (6-6-5) will host the Philadelphia Flyers (10-7-1) tonight at UBS Arena on the 1st of 2 games they’ll play.
The Flyers are off to a good start that most did not expect, sitting 2nd in the division. They’re coming in on a 5-game win streak and will look to keep it going. They’re 6-4 in their last 10 games, so they’re really hot as of late.
Philly has been playing very steady offense with stingy defense. They are averaging 3.33 goals per game, which is 15th in the league, and have a 10.6 shooting percentage and that ranks 14th in the league.
Their offense has been well rounded on the roster. There are 8 players with double digit points, including Travis Konecny, Own Tippett and Cam Atkinson. Even their rookie Bobby Brink has played well and has 4 goals and 5 assists. It’s definitely a team effort in the city of brotherly love.
Their stingy defense has been a big part of their success. They rank 11th in the league with only 2.89 goals allowed per game and rank 3rd in the league for shots on goal allowed with 27.7. This will pose a problem for the Islanders are they don’t shoot much and well.
Another problem will be the man in the net, Carter Hart. Hart has done his job so far with a 2.40 GAA and .919 save percentage. He has a record of 6-3-0 as well. Backup goalie Samuel Ersson hasn’t been the greatest this year with a 3-3-1 record but has held his own. Look for Hart to be the starter in tonight’s game.
New York on the other hand has been struggling to finish games and sit in the 7th spot in the division. They rank in the bottom of the league for goals scored per game (2.53) and shooting percentage (8.2%), which isn’t helping. All of this puts a lot of pressure on their goaltenders who are feeling the pressure.
The Islanders started out much better than their play as of late. They’re currently 2-4-4- in their last 10 games. New York is coming off a win vs the Flames Saturday night in a shootout, but they gave up the lead in that as well.
Ilya Sorokin’s record and stats shows where the Islanders are struggling and that’s playing defense. He has a record of 4-3-4 with a GAA of 3.32 and a .906 save percentage. If you know Sorokin, you know these aren’t his normal numbers at all. He has had 30+ saves in 7 games this season. Guy needs some help getting peppered like that every game.
New York also struggles on offense, with one of the lowest rated ones for production in the league. They are only forcing 2.53 goals per game (29th in the league) and averaging 31 shots per game (15th in the league).
They have 1 more overtime loss at home than on the road but are 3-3 otherwise at home or on the road. The Islanders will look to build on the momentum from their win Saturday.

Philadelphia Flyers vs New York Islanders Prediction and Picks
Prediction and Pick: New York Islanders Moneyline (-145) MyBookie
Although the Flyers are hot right now, the Islanders have had their number over the years and need another win badly. The Isles are 8-2 in their last 10 games vs the Flyers. They are also 5-0 in their last 5 home games vs Philly.
A lot needs to happen here for New York to take this game and that is playing halfway decent defense, Sorokin being solid and finding the back of the net at least 3 times. They are averaging 4 goals per game over the last 5 home games.
Home ice needs to be loud and proud tonight to support their guys. Being a game before a holiday, the place tends to pack out. This is no Mr. Beast Mega Mac Jagaloon play, but I think the Islanders get back to winning ways and take this game tonight.
Player Prop: Ilya Sorokin O28.5 Saves (-109) MyBookie
What’s not broke, don’t fix right? We all know the Islanders defense is weak and they allow a ton of shots per game. Also, just by looking at Sorokin’s past games – the man has just been peppered.
He has hit this line is all but 3 games this year. Coming off back-to-back games of 35+ saves, we go right back to it. Philly is average around 31 shots per game and you can add approximately 5 more shots because they’re playing the Isles.
I won’t beat the horse until it’s dust on this one – we’re running it back!
