We’re going to have a battle on our hands tonight in Dallas. The New York Rangers (12-2-1) will take on the Stars (11-4-1) at the American Airlines Arena. We should have a battle on our hands as both teams are off to a hot start. Both teams also lead their respective divisions.
The Rangers are 9-0-1 in their last 10 games and are coming in on a 4-game winning streak. They are coming off a solid 5-3 win against divisional rivals the New Jersey Devils. Whether their home or on the road, New York comes prepared, only losing 1 game at home and 1 on the road.
New York has been playing great 2-way hockey which is a big reason for their success. They’re averaging 3.4 goals per game on offense on only 28.9 shots on goal per game, which ranks in the bottom of the league.
They may not shoot as much, but they make the most of it. They shoot an 11.8% rate, 3rd best in the league, and are 33.3% on the Power Play, 2nd best in the league. Leading the league in faceoffs one, winning 55.9% of the time, gains control right from the start.
Artemi Panarin is putting up unbelievable numbers to lead this offense. He has 10 goals and 16 assists so far with a 9 of those assists coming on the Power Play. You can tell by the stat lines that his dishes are paying off. The Rangers have 6 more players with double digit point totals as well.
Goaltender Igor Shesterkin has started off on the right foot. He is 7-2-0 to start the year with a 2.44 GAA and a .912 save percentage. The former Vezina winner may need a little defensive help to keep that GAA down, but it is still nothing to sneeze at.
Although his GAA is a little high, the Rangers defense has been on point, ranking in the tops of league. They are only allowing 2.2 goals per game, 2nd best in the league and allowing 27.8 shots on goal, which is 5th best.
Now let’s move over and talk about Dallas. They have somehow been hanging in there and finding ways to win. Their offense has not been the greatest or at least isn’t what it was last year. Defensively they haven’t played too bad.
The Stars average just about as many goals per game as the Rangers and on only 2 more shots on goal per game. When looking at their numbers on paper, Dallas is playing middle of the road.
Dallas is allowing almost 3 goals per game with an average of 2.75. Not too bad considering they rank 25th in the league for shots on goal allowed per game with 32.5. That is a lot of shots allowed for that low of goals allowed.
The other bright spot of their defense is their penalty kill. Dallas ranks 2nd in the league with a 89.1% on the penalty kill. This team also plays smart and don’t commit many penalties, average only 8.8 minutes per game, which is 6th best in the league.
It’s been a team effort on offense with all their weapons. The Stars have 8 players with double digits in points. One player is newly acquired Matt Duchene who has 6 goals and 8 assists. Joe Pavelski and Jason Robertson are both tied for the most points on the team with 15.
Just like the Rangers, goaltending has been another big piece of the team's success. Jake Oettinger is 8-3-1 to start the season. He has a 2.50 GAA and a .920 save percentage. Otty has been a huge piece of this team and continues to do be one.
With all the matchups being somewhat even, where are the best plays and what are the moves for this game? Let’s get into them.

New York Rangers vs Dallas Stars Prediction and Picks
Prediction and Pick: Game Total Under 6 (-120) MyBookie
We have a good matchup on our hands here and one bright spot will be between the pipes. With Shesterkin and Oettinger playing, I think we see a very skilled game out of both.
I think both teams are going to play tight games and slow each other down. Dallas has the edge at home, but they’re going to want to play a clean game and not be in the penalty box. The Rangers have such a dangerous power play that could really put them behind.
Both goalies will probably only see 30 shots at max as well. I really like this to be a good game and it’ll come down to which goaltender can be more solid. It’s hard to pick a side, I would unofficially lean towards the Rangers though because they have so much momentum right now.
I like the total at 6 and the price isn’t bad. This game may fall on 6 and we get the push. I feel like it ends 3-2, but not sure which side. We’ll have to tune in for that!
Player Prop: Mika Zibanejad Over 2.5 Shots on Goal (-120)
Mika is starting to come around as of late. He has only 2 goals and 8 assists which is low compared to some of his teammates. This winning streak is bringing him some momentum.
He has hit his line in the last 2 games with 3 shots and 5 shots. It went 4 games prior where he did not hit the mark, but the 4 games prior to that – he smacked. He had shot counts of 5, 3, 3, and 5.
Zibanejad has some good numbers vs the Stars as well. He has hit the mark in 3 out of the last 4 games vs Dallas, including his last 2 back-to-back. Interesting part is in the 3 games, he had 4, 5, 4 shots so cleared the number nicely.
Mika plays much better on the road, which makes me like this more. He has hit his mark in 8 out of his last 9 road games this season. I like this matchup tonight with his history and road play to get it done for us.
