The Eastern Conference playoff picture has heated up and we got you covered. The Carolina Hurricanes will head to Washington DC to take on the Capitals tonight. Both teams sit in the top 2 spots of the Metro Division and have clinched playoff spots.
Washington is 49-19-9 this season and 1st in the Metro Division. They come into this game off a loss to the Islanders Sunday, but Ovechkin set the goal scoring record, so I think that’s all they care about (lol). The Capitals are 5-4-1 in their last 10 games, 25-8-6 at home and 15-6-0 in divisional games this season.
This team has shocked the league this season. Their offense ranks 1st for goals scored and shooting percentage per game. Washington is 21st in shots on goal per game, but they made them count with that shooting percentage.
On defense, this team is strong. They rank 8th in goals allowed and 9th in shots on goal allowed per game. Their special teams are decent on both ends of the ice, with their power play ranking 12th and penalty kill ranking 6th in the league.
Goalie Charlie Lindgren is expected in night with Thompson out. He is 18-13-3 with a 2.71 GAA and a .894 save percentage. Lindgren has been holding it down while Thompson gets rested for the playoffs.
Hurricanes locked in the 2nd seed in the Metro Division but on 3-game skid

The Carolina Hurricanes players celebrate together after scoring a goal.
Although they’re sitting in the 2nd spot in the Metro, the Hurricanes have a hit skid. They’re 46-27-4 this season but come into this game on a 3-game losing streak and are only 5-5-0 in their last 10 games. Carolina struggles on the road with a 16-19-3 record but are 17-4-3 in divisional games.
This team’s offense has taken a turn this season. They usually are very offense heavy but fell off a bit. They rank 9th for goals scored and 2nd for shots on goal per game but are 23rd in shooting percentage and 24th in power play.
Carolina has always smothered teams on defense and they’re doing just that again this year. They’re 8th in the league for goals allowed but 1st in the league for shots on goal allowed per game. The Canes also have the best penalty kill in the league, which is key since they commit about 4 penalties per game.
In net, we’re expected to see Frederik Andresen. He’s 13-6-0 this season with a 2.11 GAA and a .914 save percentage. He secured a 1 goal win last game vs the Caps last week. Let’s check out the odds and get into the picks.

It’s hard for me to pick against the Capitals right now. Even though they are coming off a loss, they were more concerned with Ovi getting his goal last game. Now, it’s time to kick it into playoff gear and the books are giving us plus money.
The Canes definitely play a better defense, but their biggest strength is blocking shots, which the Caps don’t take much. Making the count will be the key for Washington. When it really comes down to it, neither team has anything to play for right now as they are set in their seeds.
Washington also isn’t going to forget the beating they took from the Canes last week. If anything, this is a good test to get the Caps ready for playoff action. I like for Brent Burns to record 2 or more shots on goal for -135. He has an 83% hit rate vs the Caps and is coming off a miss from last game. Burns has also hit in his last 5 games at the Capital One Arena.
The other play I like is the under. I think both teams keep the other in check, especially Washington not wanting to get blown out again. We should see a 2-1 or 3-1 final score for this game.
