Rivalry night in the Metro Division as we have the league leading New York Rangers (50-21-4) taking on the New Jersey Devils (36-35-4). The last time these 2 teams faced off, the Rangers won the game 3-1.
New York is dominating their competition. Their 104 points puts them in the lead for the Presidents Trophy, which they honestly may win.
The Rangers come into this game off a 5-2 loss to the Penguins on Monday night. They’re 7-3-0 in their last 10 games and have a home record of 26-10-0.
On offense, New York ranks in the top of the league for goals scored (3.41), shoot percentage (11%), and power play percentage (25.7%). They don’t put the most pucks on net per game, but they make them count with that shooting percentage.
There’s a reason they’re the best team right now because they play a complete 2-way game. On defense, they rank in the top 10 in the league for goals allowed per game and penalty kill percentage. Their stingy defense only allows 29.6 shots on goal per game, which ranks 12th best in the league.
Goalie Igor Shesterkin is expected to be in between the pipes. After a slow start to the season, he stopped playing around. He has a 32-16-2 record with a 2.64 GAA and a .911 save percentage.
New Jersey needs a win desperately…can they get one past the Rangers?
The Devils are having such a disappointing year. They started off hot, cooled off and never got back in their groove. Sitting 7th in arguably the toughest division in the league this late in the game may be too late.
New Jersey has 7 games left and are 6 points out of a very tight race for the 2nd Wild Card position. Looking at their schedule, they have some tough matchups vs teams like the Maple Leafs Flyers and the Predators.
Coming in for the 2nd night of a back-to-back, the Devils just lost 6-3 to the Penguins. It was their 2nd loss in a row and puts them 5-5-0 in their last 10 games. They’re going to need to play better to hopefully sneak into the playoffs.
Their goaltending situation has been weird all year. The team’s original starter goes down, so the backup takes the starting role. Trade deadline comes around and the Devils clean house and get 2 mediocre goalies.
Kaapo Kahkonen is expected to get the start and he’s had a rough year. He’s 7-22-3 on the year with a 3.24 GAA and .897 save percentage. The Devils needs to be careful because the Rangers could easily have their way with him.

This is going to be a tough game for the Devils. Not only do I think the Rangers have their number, but they are a much better team playing better hockey.
Games against these 2 teams are always great games, but the Rangers are not going to take their foot off the pedal just because they clinched.
Expect both teams to be firing the puck as usual. I think this game goes over, but I also think the Rangers control this game from start to finish. The Devils will get their goals in there, but the Rangers should light Kahkonen up.
A really nice look is Jack Hughes shots on goal. Although he didn’t get his shots in their last match, he had 3 games out of 4 where he had 8+ shots on goal. His line will probably be 4.5, so 6+ at plus money is nice. Also…sprinkle that anytime goal!
