A battle of the Metro Division tonight as the Carolina Hurricanes (6-5-0) will face the New York Islanders (5-2-2) for the first time this season. The last time these 2 teams met was when the Canes eliminated the Islanders from last year’s playoffs.
Carolina has struggled on the road this season, going 3-5-0 and have split their divisional games 1-1 so far. They dropped a few tough games to the Avs, Kraken and most recently the Rangers.
Goaltender Freddy Andersen has been playing well to start the season. He’s 4-1 with a 2.87 GAA and .894 save percentage. As long as he can stay healthy, he gives the Canes a real chance. He took a puck to the head last month that had him out for a few games.
Although they’ve dropped a few games, the Canes offense has been the same as past years. Firing the puck, they rank 2nd in the league with 34.4 shots on goal per game. Their also playing stingy defense, ranking 1st in the league allowing only 26.1 shots per game.
These 2 teams have a lot of history from division rivals to multiple playoff series. It is most definitely safe to say these guys do not like each other and will be in store for another battle.
The Canes are going to need to bring it all as they face Islanders star Goaltender Ilya Sorokin. He was a Vezina Finalist last year and so far, is putting on another Vezina worthy year.
New York is off to a decent start with 5 wins on the year. Sorokin will be in net and so far is 3-1-2 with a 2.98 GAA and .910 save percentage. Anyone who has watched or is familiar with the Islanders know they play a very slow-paced game. They also do not score much, which is where Sorokin’s 2 overtime losses come from.
The Islanders have also made a lot of stupid mistakes resulting in penalties that cost them the game. One of their OT loses came against the Devils where they allowed 4 power play goals. If they can reign that in, that would have been a huge W.
Brock Nelson picked up where he left off from last year scoring 5 goals already. The entire team has really come together though, having 7 players with multi-goals so far.
They have also moved the puck around well, creating chances for guys like Nelson, Bo Horvat and Kyle Palmieri. Defenseman Nosh Dobson has really come to form, leading the team with 7 assists and 9 points.
Isles will have to get back to their ways and play better shut down defense. They are ranking in the bottom of the league for shots on goal allowed with 34.4 per game. Their goaltending has saved them though as they only allow 2.67 goals per game which ranks 6th best in the league.
This fast paced Hurricanes offense will be a tough task for the Isles. Will they be able to slow them down with their defensive style of hockey? Will they be able to bring that defensive style back? Let’s get into it.

Carolina Hurricanes vs New York Islanders Prediction and Picks
Prediction and Pick: Total Goals Under 5.5 (-104)
As mentioned before, a lot of history between these 2 division rivals. We have 2 really good goaltenders in net who both have been playing well along with the Islanders low scoring play – give me the under.
The last 3 regular season games went under vs these 2 teams. Last game played was a playoff game, but that also went under. Sorokin has been fantastic at home as well.
New York’s style of play also plays a big factor. They need to play their game on defense as well. As long as Sorokin can keep up his play, this game should soar under.
The sportsbooks already think this game will be low scoring by setting a 5.5 total. They’re seeing the value in these goaltenders.
I won’t beat the horse til it’s dust. One low scoring offense that plays good defense along with 2 solid goalies and I’m taking the under.
Player Prop: Ilya Sorokin O30.5 Saves (-115)
My man is putting on a hell of show so far this year. The books finally adjusted to his play and raised the line by 3. I still love this play and will continue to play it as the season goes on.
He has had 32, 45, 32 and 34 saves in his last 4 games and they were all home games. You can tell he is comfortable in his own barn with the crowd behind him.
With the amount of shots the Canes take plus the number of shots the Isles allow, means Sorokin will be getting peppered again. This is just a recipe for another 30+ save performance out of Ilya.
