For the 2nd game of this year’s Stadium Series games, we have the 2 New York teams facing off. The New York Rangers (35-16-3) will play the New York Islanders (22-18-13) at MetLife Stadium in what should be another memorable game in this rivalry.
This will be the 2nd time the Rangers and Islanders play a Stadium Series game. The last game they played was in 2014 at Yankee Stadium and the Rangers won the game 2-1.
Every Stadium Series game means new sweaters for the occasion. I don’t really like the Islanders one, but the Rangers hit the mark for clean. Let’s peep this year’s jerseys for both teams.
The Rangers are in the 1st place of the Metro Division and coming in hot as the sun. They’re on a 6-game winning streak and are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games.
Since this is at MetLife, this is pretty much a home game for both teams even though the Rangers are the away team. The Rangers play well on the road and at home, so it really doesn’t matter.
They rank in the top 15 in the league for goals scored (3.3) and shots on goal (31.2) per game. Their power play is 5th best in the league with a 25.6% conversion rate.
On defense, the Rangers are really good. They rank in the top 10 in the league for goals allowed and shots on goal allowed. Their penalty kill is 5th best in the league with a 83.6% kill rate.
Goaltender Igor Shesterkin will get the start in net. He has a 21-12-1 record with a 2.78 GAA and .902 save percentage. The former Vezina winner has not looked the best this year but is still one of the top goalies in the league.
Can the pesky Islanders find a way to get past the Rangers?
The Islanders come into this game on a 2-game losing streak and are 4-5-1 in their last 10 games. They’re 5th in the Metro and have slipped as of late. New York need a strong run in this 2nd half of the season to get into the playoffs.
Their offense ranks towards the bottom the league for goals scored and shots on goal per game. Finishing games has been the Isles biggest problem. New York leads the league in OTL with 13.
On defense, the Islanders struggle as well. They bleed shots on goal per game and it really puts a lot of pressure on their goaltenders.
Ilya Sorokin has had a rough year so far compared to last year. He has a 16-12-10 record with a 3.04 GAA and a .911 save percentage. Sorokin has really put this team on his back to get much needed wins. He is expected to get the start.
We have a good one on our hands – let’s check out the odds and get into some picks.

New York Rangers vs New York Islanders Prediction and Picks

There are a lot of things to consider for this total. Obviously, we have 2-star goaltenders playing on a big stage. These 2 guys love playing when it matters, and this is also going to be fun.
Another consideration is the ice conditions. The outdoor ice is much different than the ice in an arena. It brings back a lot of memories for guys, but the ice is definitely rougher than in the arena.
The sportsbooks are already showing the same prediction by setting the line the at 5.5. The value on the line is almost a pick ’em though, so you never know.
Both goalies have been leaky this year, which is the only thing that scares me, but I think they shine tomorrow. All the players will also not be used to playing in front of such a large crowd too.
Taking all of these things into consideration, we’re taking the under. We’re going to see a good hard fought, but probably sloppy game.
