Keep scrolling for everything you need to know regarding the 2024 NHL All-Star Game, including this year’s roster, format, schedule, and a prediction for which team will win the tournament.
2024 NHL All-Star Draft Format
This year’s All-Star Weekend format is a mix of both old and new concepts.
For starters, the draft is back for the first time since 2015. Instead of teams being decided by their divisions, each of the four captains will draft their teammates. This year’s captains are:
- Auston Matthews (TOR)
- Connor McDavid (EDM)
- Nathan MacKinnon (COL)
- Quinn Hughes (VAN)
The above captains will select their teammates when the draft is held on Thursday at 6 p.m. ET, airing on ESPN2 and ESPN+. Although the full teams aren’t known at the time of writing, we do know that each captain already has a teammate and celebrity co-captain.
- Team Matthews — Morgan Rielly and Justin Bieber
- Team McDavid — Leon Draisaitl and Will Arnett
- Team MacKinnon — Cale Makar and Tate McRae
- Team Hughes — Jack Hughes and Michael Bublé
Here’s a look at the odds for the 10 players who are most likely to be selected first overall at Thursday’s draft, per Bovada:
- William Nylander, TOR (+300)
- Nikita Kucherov, TBL (+600)
- David Pastrnak, BOS (+700)
- Sidney Crosby, PIT (+700)
- Mitch Marner, TOR (+800)
- Alexandar Georgiev, COL (+1600)
- Connor Hellebuyck, WPG (+1600)
- J.T. Miller, VAN (+1600)
- Jesper Bratt, NJ (+1600)
- Thatcher Demko, VAN (+1600)
With the Maple Leafs hosting the event this year, Matthews drafting Nylander with the first-overall pick (+300) seems like a no-brainer.

2024 NHL All-Star Skills Competition Format
After fans voiced their displeasure about how the All-Star skills competition lost its shine in recent years, the annual event will return to a simpler format.
This year’s skills competition — taking place on Friday at 7 p.m. ET (ESPN, ESPN+) — will feature 12 players going head-to-head in an event that’ll test various skills.
The first round will feature the players competing in four of six events that’ll challenge their speed, shot strength, stick handling, one-timer skills, passing, and shot accuracy. Players will earn points depending on where they finish in each competition.
The eight players with the most points will then move on to Round 2, where they’ll go one-on-one with a goalie of their choosing in a shootout competition. The six top point-getters from here will move on to the obstacle course finale where points are doubled.
Whichever player finishes on top will earn a whopping $1 million.
Check out the below tweet from NHL insider Mark Scheig regarding which players will compete in which NHL All-Star skills competitions.

There are a ton of skills competition props available on Bovada, but I like McDavid winning the fastest skater competition (+115) the most. Not only is he one of the league’s fastest skaters, but he also won this competition three years in a row from 2017 to 2019.

2024 NHL All-Star Game Format
Much like it has been since 2016, this year’s NHL All-Star Game takes the form of a four-team tournament on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET (ABC, ESPN+). Each game will be played 3-on-3 with 10-minute halves and if there’s a tie after 20 minutes, a three-round shootout (followed by sudden death) will take place.
The two winning 11-player teams then go head-to-head in the finals to determine this year’s winner.
Although we still don’t know the complete teams, here’s a look at how Bovada’s 2024 NHL All-Star Game odds are shaping up:
- Team McDavid (+250)
- Team MacKinnon (+275)
- Team Matthews (+275)
- Team Hughes (+300)
It’s still early, but I do have a good feeling about Team McDavid (+250). McDavid is the best player in the NHL and Draisaitl is no slouch either, having been the league’s MVP in 2020. If any duo is capable of defeating the rest of the sport’s best players, it’s the dynamic Oilers pair.
Having said that, it’s worth noting that Matthews is Bovada’s +800 All-Star MVP favorite. McDavid holds the second-best odds at +900, though, which is terrific value in my eyes.
