Only 2 games on today after yesterday’s massive slate. We got the New Jersey Devils (6-3-1) visiting the Chicago Blackhawks (4-6-0) in a Sunday Night Showdown.
The Devils are sitting at 3rd in the Metro Division while the Blackhawks are sitting in last place in the Central Division. Chicago is in a rebuild year and just drafted star Connor Bedard 1st overall. The kid has looked pretty good so far recording 5 goals and 2 assists.
Veterans Corey Perry and Nick Foligno have been great additions to the team and give good leadership to Bedard on and off the ice. Taylor Hall was also brought in and although he hasn’t found himself on the ice yet, he is a good addition as well.
Chicago is coming off their 1st home win of the season last night vs the Panthers. They won by a score of 5-2 and led 4-0 at one point in the game. Bedard scored a goal on a breakaway and Hall scored his first goal of the year. Hopefully he got the monkey off his back and will start to produce.
Petr Mrazek saved 38 shots in the win as well. He really put on a show and kept the Hawks in the whole game. Chicago will have Arvid Soderblom in net tonight, and he has had a rough start to the year, sitting at 1-3. He will have another tough game in front of him vs this heavy offensive Devils teams.
Now let’s talk about the Devils. The addition of Tyler Toffoli has been paying off beautifully has he has 7 goals and 4 assists to start. Jesper Bratt is picking up where he left off last year with 7 goals and 11 assists so far.
Jack Hughes is already putting on an MVP performance. He has 5 goals and 15 assists, leading the league with 20 points. This kid is really something else and he’s just getting started. He’s only going to get more comfortable in this league and become more of a superstar every year. He will be missed tonight as he is out with an upper body injury.
Along with Hughes out, the Devils will also be without Captain Nico Hischier, who is also out with an upper body injury. Bratt, Toffoli and Timo Meier will need to step up to fill the offensive void.
Vitek Vanecek will be between the pipes tonight for the Devils. He has had a really nice start to the season with a 5-2 record. He is letting in some goals though with a 3.21 GAA.
One of New Jersey’s weak spots is they allow just about the same number of goals as they force per game. They average 3.9 goals per game but also average 3.6 goals allowed per game. Luckily for them, Chicago ranks in the bottom of the league for goals scored and shots on goal per game forced and allowed.
Can Chicago ride the momentum from last night or will the back-to-back hurt them? Let’s check out the odds on the sportsbook and get into it!

New Jersey Devils vs Chicago Blackhawks Prediction and Picks
Prediction and Pick: Game Total Under 6.5 (-128)
This should be a closer game than expected with Hughes and Hischier out. New Jersey will still produce offense, outplay the Blackhawks and put some in on their goalie.
With the Devils being 2 key players down, Chicago starting Soderblom and coming off the back-to-back is kind of a gift. It all works out perfectly for the Devils to win this game maybe 4-2 or 3-1.
The Blackhawks should be able to get 1 or 2 by Vanecek, but that’s it. Sundays tend to be a snooze fest as well, so I’m leaning that way. I do like the Devils to get it done and outplay them but should be a low scoring match. We’re going to pay the juice man.
Little Nugget for a Sprinkle: Tyler Toffoli Anytime Goal (+115)
With the 2 big guys out, this just leaves more opportunity for him to score. He has 7 goals on the year and hasn’t scored in his last 2, so he’s coming up on that term “due”.
In his last 5 games vs the Blackhawks going back to last year, he has hit his shots on goal in all 4 games 5, 3, 4, 4, and 4. He scored in his last game vs the Blackhawks too.
He’ll play on the 1st line with Dawson Mercer and Timo Meier as well as the 1st power play unit. Playing with these guys makes him the number 1 target on the team pretty much.
Remember…just a sprinkle, but I think he finds the back of the net tonight.
