Maple Leafs vs Blackhawks Prediction & Pick (Nov. 24)
You don’t have to go too far back to find when these Original 6 clubs last met. The showdown in question took place at Scotiabank Arena back on Oct. 16, ending in a 4-1 victory for the Blackhawks as the Maples just couldn’t solve goaltender Arvid Soderblom.
Having said that, a lot has changed for both clubs since that night.
For example, the Blackhawks have only picked up three more victories across 13 games since then. They’ve more than earned their reputation as one of the NHL’s worst teams — especially if their current five-game skid is anything to go by.
Chicago has surrendered an average of 4.4 goals per game amid its losing streak, highlighting how big of an issue goaltending has become. Underperforming special teams units have also played a role in the misfortunes, proven by a 7.1% power play percentage and 62.5% penalty kill success rate over that stretch.
As for the Maple Leafs, their special teams units are finding success. They’re 3-for-8 (37.5%) on the power play while killing 13-of-15 (86.7%) penalties throughout their winning streak, solidifying just how badly they outmatch the Blackhawks.
Speaking of Toronto’s four-game winning streak, four different players are playing at a point-per-game pace during that span. With that being said, no one is playing better than William Nylander, who’s on a 17-game point streak to begin the campaign, racking up 27 total thus far.
It isn’t like Nylander is doing it all on his own, though. Auston Matthews (21), Mitch Marner (20), John Tavares (19), and Morgan Rielly (15) are all living up to their contracts.
The Blackhawks just don’t have the same depth to keep pace. It’s made clear by the fact that Bedard and Philipp Kurashev — Chicago’s top point-getters — have as many combined points as Nylander on his own.
The Blackhawks’ lack of depth will be made even more obvious now that Taylor Hall’s season is over and Anthony Athanasiou is heading to the injured reserve.
Taking everything into account, it’s easy to side with the Maple Leafs this afternoon. Hell, I’d even go as far as saying you should back them to cover the 1.5-point spread. Toronto knows how to score while Chicago can’t keep the puck out of the back of the net. That’s a recipe for a multi-margin win for the visitors.
Furthermore, the Maple Leafs will be even more motivated by last month’s loss, allowing them to use the Blackhawks as a means to send a message.
Maple Leafs vs Blackhawks Prediction: TOR wins
Best Bet: TOR -1.5 (+102 on Bovada)
Maple Leafs vs Blackhawks Best Player Prop
With the way his season is going, it’s a no-brainer to take William Nylander as an anytime goalscorer when there are plus-odds involved.
Nylander already has 12 goals through 17 games and has found the back of the net in each of his last five outings. He’s perfectly comfortable playing away from home, scoring five of his goals in eight road games.
With nine goals in 12 career meetings with Chicago (including six at the United Center), Nylander is in good shape to come through one more time.
Bet: William Nylander Anytime Goal Scorer (+102 on Bovada)
