We have a battle on our hands between the Winnipeg Jets (30-11-4) and the Toronto Maple Leafs (23-14-8). These 2 teams met once already this season and the Leafs won 4-1. This is the 1st game of a home-at-home for them.
The Jets sit in the top spot of the Central Division and are the 3rd best team in the league. They come into this game off a loss, but still hot. Winnipeg is 8-2 in their last 10 games and also 14-5-2 on the road.
On the offensive side of things, the Jets get the job done. They have battled some injuries though. Mark Scheifele is now out with a lower body injury right after the team got Kyle Connor back.
Scheifele’s absence is felt as he leads the team in assists and points. Nikolaj Ehlers has been stepping up with 5 goals and 4 assists in his last 10 games. Connor’s return is huge as well. Even with the injury, he leads the team with 18 goals.
Other the other side of the ice, the Jets do play good defense. They rank 1st in the league for goals (2.29) and 7th in the league for shots on goal allowed (29). Winnipeg stays out of the box, but do not kill penalties good at all. They rank 24th in the league for penalty kill with a 77.5% kill rate.
A big reason for their success this year in their goaltending. Connor Hellebuyck is putting on a Vezina worth year. His back up, Laurent Brossoit, will get the start. He has a record of 7-3-1 with a 2.18 GAA and a .923 save percentage. He has won his last 4 starts.
Can Toronto use home ice to their advantage and get a win?
The Maple Leafs have a very expensive offense in just 4 players, but they are top notch. The recent new contract for William Nylander has got the team and the city buzzing.
Toronto is 3rd in the Atlantic Division and coming in off a win vs the Kraken on Sunday. That was the last game of a 4 game West Coast trip that they split 2-2. After this home-at-home with the Jets, they will come back home for 2 more games.
So, we talked about the players that make up this offense, now let’s talk about what they’ve done. These boys rank 5th in the league for goals scored (3.49) and shots on goal (33.2) per game. They also rank in the top 10 for power play percentage, shooting percentage and faceoff wins.
On defense, they need to work on almost everything. The Leafs allow 3.27 goals per game, which is just about what they are scoring a game. They allow 30.6 shots on goal per game and have a 76.4 save percentage.
Goaltending has been an issue for the Leafs. Ilya Samsonov will get the start and is coming off a solid win vs the Kraken. He only allowed 1 goal and had a 9.41 save percentage. Samsonov will look to duplicate this performance tonight vs the Jets.

I like this spot for the Jets vs this shotty Leafs team. They have a good record, but they let up a lot of goals and a team like Winnipeg can quickly take advantage of that.
Samsonov got the win last game, but I think the Jets come out hot and fast. I expect them to get out to a quick lead to start the game. Look for Kyle Connor to be heavily involved. He scored on Samsonov last game.
The Jets defense should be the difference maker here. Toronto will be facing a new goalie that they haven’t seen. Brossoit has been playing well this year and I can seem him easily giving the Leafs a problem.
I’m going to take the Jets at plus money. The sportsbooks are giving the edge to Toronto because they are home and I get that, but I don’t think it’s going to be enough to get the win. Sprinkle Kyle Connor for a goal if you’re feeling spicy.
