The Carolina Hurricanes missed an opportunity to break out the brooms against the New York Islanders on Saturday, losing in overtime to a Matthew Barzal goal. Tonight, they get a second crack at eliminating the Isles, this time at home in Game 5 at PNC Arena in Raleigh (7:30 pm ET, TBS).
Two Eastern Conference series have already concluded, with the New York Rangers sweeping the Washington Capitals on Sunday and the Florida Panthers taking out the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 5 last night.
Tonight, the rest of the second-round puzzle in the East could be completed, with the Boston Bruins also looking to move on at home against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Though they missed an opportunity to get some extra rest, the Hurricanes are still heavily favored to set up a showdown with the Rangers. Of the six ongoing first-round series, Carolina is the biggest favorite. At BetOnline, they are -4000 to win the series, while the Islanders sit at +1500 ahead of tonight’s contest.

The Canes defended home ice better than all but a few teams in the regular season, and they took care of business at PNC Arena in Games 1 and 2. Can the Isles upset the odds to take the series to a Game 6 at UBS Arena?

New York Islanders vs Carolina Hurricanes Betting Analysis
In the regular season, only four teams picked up more points in home games than the Hurricanes (27-10-4, 58 points): the Colorado Avalanche (31-9-1, 63 points), New York Rangers (30-11-0, 60 points), Edmonton Oilers (28-9-4, 60 points), and Vancouver Canucks (27-9-5, 59 points).
All four teams are likely to be in the second round, with the Rangers already locked in and the Hurricanes, Canucks, and Oilers all holding 3-1 series leads.
All four teams are the higher seed in their respective series. While there has been a little more parity in the Western Conference, higher seeds have been dominant at home to this point in the Eastern Conference.
Going into tonight’s four games, higher seeds in the East have won eight of nine games at home. Boston’s Game 2 loss to the Leafs represents the lone blemish thus far.
Carolina should continue that success tonight. Including their two home wins over the Islanders in this series, the Canes are 10-2-0 in their last dozen home games, losing only to the Bruins (4-1 on April 4) and Rangers (1-0 on March 12).
The Islanders certainly did well to finish strong and reach the playoffs, going 8-0-1 in their last nine regular season games. And they did well to force a Game 5 after falling behind in the first period in Game 4.
This is where the road will end for the Isles, however. In last year’s first-round series between the two teams, they won at PNC Arena to force a Game 6, which the Canes won. That may give them an extra boost of hope and confidence, but don’t expect history to repeat itself tonight.
