The Carolina Hurricanes and New York Rangers are set to begin their second round series on Wednesday night in Raleigh. In their four meetings this season, Carolina took home 3 out of the 4.
Both teams are coming off long series in which 7 games were needed to decide who would advance. The Hurricanes survived the Boston Bruins with a nail-biting Game 7 victory. The Rangers came from 3-1 down in their series against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Each team has had little time to prepare and rest up for their second round battle. The Hurricanes are the favorite heading into the series. However, they will want to right their wrongs and avoid another long seven game set.

Defensive Adjustments are Key
In both of the teams’ first round series, each gave up a lot of goals. Each team gave up 4 or more goals three times. Every single time this happened, they ended up losing the game.
New York gave up 29 goals in Round 1. They only scored 29 themselves, but somehow rallied past Pittsburgh to advance into Round 2. Carolina only did a little bit better than that and outscored the Bruins by 4 goals in Round 1.
Both teams struggled to stay consistent in the opening round. Dominant wins were followed by bad losses, and we never knew what to expect in the next game. This is a big reason why both teams needed 7 games to knock out lower seeded teams.
Heading into Round 2, if either team plays like they did in Round 1, expect the other to jump on the opportunity. Goals seemed to come in bunches for both sides when the opposite team was struggling.
The Rangers advanced to the second round due to a lot of injuries that the Penguins were dealing with. It certainly helped that star players were not on the ice in Games 5 and 6. Carolina dealt with a healthier team in the Boston Bruins. They never lost at home, and defense was able to hold in Game 7.
The second round will be a whole other challenge for both teams. Expect teams with little rest to adjust on the fly and have a gameplan in place prior to the end of Game 1. Carolina has the advantage in Round 2. They are healthy, and they have home ice advantage.
Hurricanes vs. Rangers Series Prediction and Betting Tips
Prediction: Hurricanes win the series 4-2
The Hurricanes have not lost at home during the postseason. They have the edge over New York in the season series, and they played a healthier team in Round 1. The Hurricanes should have the upper hand if the defense can improve a little bit.
I expect six games as the maximum in this series. The Rangers struggled for most of the first round, and the Hurricanes will look to put games away early to shorten the series. At -210, the lines reflect this prediction, but it is still the best bet.
Value will lie in the series score and total games played. Carolina winning 4-2 currently sits at +420. Six total games sits at +205. If you are confident in the Hurricanes and are looking to bet, these two bets provide great value with the possibility of excellent return.
