Tonight, we have a good one on our hands. As the regular season winds down, every game counts that much more. We have 2 teams fighting for the same spot facing off tonight.
The Detroit Red Wings (35-28-6) will host the New York Islanders (29-24-15) in what should be a dog fight. These 2 teams faced off back on Leap Day and the Islanders came out on top 5-3.
The Red Wings currently hold the 2nd Wild Card spot while the Islanders are 3 points behind. In between the 2 is the Washington Capitals, who are only 1 game behind Detroit.
It’s been fun to watch this Red Wings team this year, especially after the addition of future Hall of Famer Patrick Kane. He has had a nice impact on this teams offense since joining.
All of that aside, the Wings have been playing terrible. They’re coming into this game after an overtime win vs the Blue Jackets but are 2-8-0 in their last 10 games. Detroit has played better at home this year, so that’s one thing in their favor.
Goalie James Reimer has been confirmed to start tonight. He has a 8-7-2 record on the year with a 2.98 GAA and a .907 save percentage. He has played back up to Alex Lyon with Ville Husso out.
Can the Islanders claw their way back into a Wild Card spot?
The Islanders had a nice little winning streak about a week or so ago that brought them right back into a Wild Card spot. They then proceed to lose their next 5 games…like, what?
New York is coming in on this 5-game skid looking to bounce back. They’re 5-4-1 in their last 10 games and aren’t the greatest road team, so they will need to step it up.
On offense and defense, they Islanders are just inconsistent. They can never find the right balance of the 2 to wins games. Either they blow a team out or get shutout – there is no in between.
Goalie Iyla Sorokin is expected to get the start and he has had an interesting season. He started out playing fantastic but was taking loses due to lack of defense. But as the season as gone on, he hasn’t looked that good. He has a 22-17-11 record with a 3.03 GAA and a .908 save percentage.
Now let’s get into the odds and then some picks.

I know I’m a homer…but you know what? I don’t care. This is the grind time, and the boys need a big bounce back spot. What better way than a road win against a team they’re competing with.
The Islanders tend to do this thing where they win games they have no business winning and this game can be a good example. Sportsbooks have Detroit favored but not by much as you even get some value with the Islanders moneyline play.
It’s going to be a scrappy game. I think we could also see a boring game where it’s very low scoring. Both teams are coming off a days rest, so maybe not.
Detroit is a good team…the Islanders are the better team though. Give me the even money for the bounce back spot.
