The Golden Knights are looking to turn things around quickly after falling 6-5 to the New Jersey Devils in overtime just last night. On the other hand, the Islanders are coming off a 3-2 OT win over the Dallas Stars in Patrick Roy’s debut behind the bench, highlighted by goaltender Ilya Sorokin turning aside 41 shots for the victory.
When it comes to Bovada’s 2023-24 Stanley Cup odds, Vegas is currently in a five-way tie for the fifth-best odds (+1200) while New York is much further down the list in 17th (+8000).

Golden Knights vs Islanders Prediction & Pick (1/23): Can Patrick Roy Keep Winning?
The decision to fire Lane Lambert wound up paying off for the Islanders, who managed to pick up the win as mentioned earlier in head coach Patrick Roy’s debut with the team. As expected, most eyes are on New York and its new bench boss to see if it can keep the momentum rolling.
It’s been nearly a decade since Roy held an NHL head coaching gig, so it’ll be interesting to see how he fares against the Golden Knights, who are the defending Stanley Cup Champions. Vegas has struggled away from home lately, losing seven straight road games since Dec. 19 while being outscored 32-16 on aggregate along the way. It doesn’t help that VGK is only 2-for-20 (10.0%) on the power play and 13-for-22 (59.1%) on the penalty kill during that stretch.
The good news for the Golden Knights is that the Islanders have gone without a PP in five straight games (0-for-11) while their opponents are 4-for-18 (22.2%) on the man advantage in those contests.
Will a date with the Islanders help the Golden Knights to turn their special teams struggles around?
It’s also important to point out that it isn’t as if Vegas doesn’t have any momentum of its own. The Golden Knights are still 3-0-1 in their last four games, which includes a massive 5-1 victory over the Metropolitan Division-leading Rangers on Jan. 18. Hell, they almost defeated the Devils had they not blown a 5-3 lead towards the end of the second period.
Even though the Islanders played well in their first game under Roy, they’re still a team that has lost six of their last eight games.
It’ll also be interesting to see if New York gives Sorokin some rest or not after starting in each of the club’s last 14 games. Although he’s one of the best netminders in the world, a 2-5-1 record with a 3.40 goals-against average and .902 save percentage in his last eight starts suggests he could use some rest. Nevertheless, backup G Semyon Varlamov was activated off the IR, leaving time to tell if he gets the start instead.
Meanwhile, Daily Faceoff says it is “likely” that the Golden Knights will start Adin Hill tonight. The 27-year-old puck-stopper has been great lately, going 6-2-1 with a 1.79 GAA, .942 SV%, and two shutouts in his last 10 starts.

Even though it’d be nice to see Roy continue finding success with the Islanders, that’ll be put on pause for now. The Golden Knights are due for a road win and now’s the perfect time to break that curse. New York has been struggling on special teams and between the pipes lately, and I’d be surprised if Bruce Cassidy’s team didn’t take advantage of that situation. They have more than enough talent at every position to do so.
For the best bet, I like the idea of taking Vegas outright on the moneyline. The Golden Knights have been better than the Islanders throughout the 2023-24 NHL season and picked up the lopsided 5-2 victory when these teams last met on Jan. 6. Even with Roy bringing new energy to New York, it won’t be good enough to stop the defending Stanley Cup Champions.

Best Golden Knights vs Islanders NHL Player Prop (1/23)
Getting a little creative with this Golden Knights vs. Islanders player prop, let’s go with Mark Stone to record at least two points.
Stone has been Vegas’ best player throughout the season, leading the team in assists (34) and points (49). He’s been playing some of his best hockey as of late, recording points in eight of his last nine games — including the last six in a row. What’s even more impressive is that the Golden Knights captain has three multi-point efforts in his last four outings and is coming off Monday’s two-assist performance.
Fortunately for Stone, the Islanders are giving up a lot of offensive opportunities, having allowed four or more goals in eight of their last 14 games. Assuming that trend continues, the 31-year-old veteran has a great opportunity to come through on this prop.
