The Devils are back in action for the first time since Monday’s hectic 6-5 overtime victory over the Vegas Golden Knights, highlighted by Tyler Toffoli’s hat trick. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes last played less than 24 hours ago as they secured a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins at TD Garden.
When it comes to the Metropolitan race, Carolina currently owns the second-best odds to win the division (+130) while New Jersey sits much further back in fifth (+1900), per Bovada’s futures markets.
With the next chapter of this rivalry looming, let’s take care of your betting needs with this Devils vs. Hurricanes preview, featuring the latest odds, an expert prediction, and the best bets.

Devils vs Hurricanes Prediction & Pick (1/25): Metropolitan Rivalry Resumes
Even though January is nearly finished, this game marks the first meeting between the Devils and Hurricanes this season. The Metropolitan Division rivals split the 2022-23 regular season series at two games apiece before meeting in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs where Carolina eliminated New Jersey in five games.
In other words, the Devils are out for revenge as the visitors after winning nine of their last 13 road games. Unfortunately, they haven’t had much recent success at PNC Arena, dropping seven of their last eight trips to Raleigh while scoring two or fewer goals in six of those contests.
Pulling off the upset won’t be any easier with the Hurricanes boasting their own momentum. Not only have they won nine of their last 12 outings, but they’ve also won seven consecutive Eastern Conference matchups. Last night’s victory over the NHL-leading Bruins will only give the Canes an even bigger boost.
The Hurricanes have had the Devils’ number for the last few seasons.
The Devils’ injury situation could also make it difficult to handle a stacked Hurricanes lineup. In addition to Jack Hughes (upper body) and Tomas Nosek (foot) being sidelined for the foreseeable future, Michael McLeod and Cal Foote were granted a leave of absence following the report five members of Canada’s 2018 world junior team “have been asked to surrender to police to face sexual assault charges.”
The Hurricanes were still without Andrei Svechnikov (upper body) against the Bruins last night, leaving time to tell if he’s able to suit up this evening. The 23-year-old forward is currently tied for third on the team with 30 points through 29 games. Nevertheless, Carolina’s only other missing pieces are goaltenders Pyotr Kochetkov (concussion) and Frederik Andersen (illness), and the team seems to be performing fine without them.
Antti Raanta will likely start for the Hurricanes tonight after going 4-2-1 with a 2.39 goals-against average and .892 save percentage in his last seven starts. Meanwhile, the Devils are likely going with Nico Daws, who is an abysmal 1-4-0 with a 3.46 GAA and .902 SV% in his last five outings.
When it comes to special teams, the Hurricanes and Devils rank third and fourth on the power play, respectively. Having said that, Carolina has a much bigger advantage on the penalty kill, operating with an 83.8% success rate (4th) compared to New Jersey’s 78.0% (23rd).
The Devils will likely have their hands full with the Hurricanes’ special teams units tonight.
In what should be a close rivalry game, I’m taking the Hurricanes to win. Even though they just played last night, Carolina is a talented team that’s proven it knows how to handle New Jersey regardless of how much rest has been had. The Devils’ lack of recent results at PNC Arena will only make pulling off an upset that much harder.
For the best bet, the Over on the 6.5-goal total is a no-brainer. The Over has been a constant for both sides, going 13-5 in New Jersey’s last 18 divisional matchups as well as 9-4 in Carolina’s last 13 home outings. Additionally, the last five Devils-Hurricanes matchups featured an average of 7.4 goals, finishing with more than the projected total four times.
With Raanta and Daws failing to stop the puck consistently as of late, I won’t be shocked if this game features quite a bit of offense.

Best Devils vs Hurricanes NHL Player Prop (1/25)
I like the Over on Tyler Toffoli’s 2.5-shot total for the best Devils vs. Hurricanes player prop tonight.
Toffoli is thriving in his first season with the Devils, tallying 20 goals while averaging 2.9 shots on goal through 45 games. He’s finished with at least five shots in each of his last two games, which includes when he tallied seven SOG while scoring a hat trick against the Golden Knights earlier this week.
If that isn’t convincing enough, the Over is also 7-2 in Toffoli’s last nine meetings with the Devils, averaging 3.6 SOG during that stretch. Considering how divisional matchups tend to bring out the best in the players involved, I like the veteran forward’s odds of coming through on this prop.
