Tonight, the Dallas Stars (31-13-6) will play the Toronto Maple Leafs (25-15-8) on the 2nd night of a back-to-back. Dallas is just coming off a 2-1 win vs the Buffalo Sabres.
The Stars are 2nd in the Central Division. They’re currently 7-2-1 in their last 10 games and are on a 4-game winning streak. Dallas has been putting pucks in the net during this stretch as well, with 16 goals scored.
Their offense has been solid this year, ranking 3rd in goals scored per game. The Stars rank 17th for shots on goal but rank 2nd for shooting percentage, so they’re making their shots count.
In the offseason, Dallas added Matt Duchene and it has paid off. He has 17 goals and 28 assists so far this season. Jason Robertson leads the team with 50 points, although he hasn’t been scoring like he did last year.
Dallas has played decent defense so far, ranking middle of the league for goals and shots on goal allowed per game. They are very good at staying out of the penalty box, committing the 2nd least amount of penalties per game.
Starting goalie Jake Oettinger is expected to get the rest and Scott Wedgewood will get the start. Wedgewood has been a solid backup with a 13-4-4 record. He also has a 2.98 GAA with a .899 save percentage.
Toronto needs to shake off the All Star weekend and get to business
It was fun and games in Toronto this weekend as they hosted this year’s All-Star festivities. They hosted the Islanders Monday night and lost the game 3-2.
This Maple Leafs team is 2nd in the Atlantic Division have had some ups and downs. They’re 4-5-1 in their last 10 games, but 3-1 in their last 4 games. Monday night’s loss ended a 3-game winning streak.
Toronto is completely front loaded offensively with one of the best offenses in the league. They rank in the top 10 for goals scored, shots on goal per game and power play conversion.
Their defense is mediocre at best. They rank 20th or worse in the league for goals allowed, shots on goal allowed and penalty kill. It’s going to be a challenge for this Leafs defense to slow the Stars offense down.
Goalie Ilya Samsonov is slated to be in net. He has played 4 games since coming back from being sent down. Samsonov is 3-1 in those 4 games and 8-4-6 on the year. He has a 3.35 GAA and a .879 save percentage. He’s going to need defensively help from his teammates to win this one,

Dallas is coming off a nice 2-1 win last night vs the Sabres. It was a good game for them to come back to and get a win. Only goalie Jake Oettinger was a part of the All-Star game for the Stars.
This Stars team is smooth. Their defense allows their offense the time to find the back of the net. Between Oetty and Wedgewood, they also have good goalies between the pipes.
I expect the Stars defense to slow the Leafs offense down right away. This game may become a bit of a chess match with the Stars killing off the Leafs offense.
Dallas will look for a chance to get ahead early. Their offense may not be as good as Toronto’s, but it is by no means bad. I think we see Dallas take an early lead and not look back. The game should go back and forth scoring, but in the end we see the Stars get the W.
